Work on an old knife

Who is a recommended sympathetic restorer, refurbisher, sharpener of old knives that I could send one to?

I picked up an old one on this forum and the blade edge could use a some rehab.

Find a couple of knife mechanics that have done work similar to what you need done, and whose work you like. In my experience you need to pick a mechanic or two and PM or email them. It’s unlikely they will contact you. Most of them have plenty to do. I’m telling you this because I made posts similar to yours and got no response. So I took the initiative to contact someone directly by sending them a PM through AAPK. Got a reply and a few weeks later I had a beautifully repaired knife. At a reasonable price.

You don’t need a photo app on this forum. Go here https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kn ... m.php?f=98 and scroll down the posts to find the instructions for posting photos with your computer, phone, or tablet. It’s easier than any third party app. And the pictures don’t disappear when your app subscription expires.

I recommend getting a stone and learning on a cheap knife honestly. A good Norton stone is around $40 and will sharpen any size knife you want. Guided sharpener systems like the Work Sharp system are good but you are limited sometimes to the knife size.

I recommend getting a stone and learning on a cheap knife honestly. A good Norton stone is around $40 and will sharpen any size knife you want. Guided sharpener systems like the Work Sharp system are good but you are limited sometimes to the knife size.

The Worksharp Guided Sharpening System has no knife size imitation. Uses diamond plates, guides your sharpening angle (basic set comes with guides for two different angles. Other angles are available options). The diamond plates and platform are able to be used without the guides if you choose to sharpen freehand. The guides are attached with magnets so if you don’t want them, they are easily removable. Best of all you can buy the basic setup for around $50. Also includes a ceramic rod for sharpening serrated blades or touching up your edge. Best of all worlds IMHO.

The kind that clamp the knife and use the rods to do precision sharpening do have a limit. You can barely get a thin pen blade to stay in it. The “guiding” on that type can easily be moved when sharpening if you don’t have a little experience

We agree. Just wanted to clarify that there are sharpening “systems” available that do not require cumbersome and blade size-limiting clamps. I don’t want no stinking clamps!

I don’t care about the guide blocks at the ends but diamond plates , ceramic rod, and strop all together and small enough to keep in the truck. It works on 90% of what I have, and the n a pinch would do the large knives.

Exactly this. My field sharpener is my right hand in my knife shop.
