Please help me identify knives!

Post by Georgiy_Velchev »

Hello to all who have looked into this topic. I recently came across two knives that I'm considering purchasing. :)
The first knife is stamped "F.*A.G." and "Rostfrei". I looked for information about its manufacturer, but I could not find anything definite. There are two supposed manufacturers with the name "FAG":
1. Friedrich August Goebel;
2. Kugelfischer AG & Co. Kg Schweinfurt.
Both of the manufacturers mentioned above made ball bearings, and it is not clear who exactly owned this knife.

The second knife is a balisong type, or butterfly knife. The tang of the blade is stamped "PATENT" and nothing else. I believe that this is old Europe (yes, butterfly knives were made at the end of the 19th century in Europe).
Dear friends, if anyone has information or any thoughts about these knives let me know. :D

I don’t know anything about either knife, but I do know that Rostfrei is the German equivalent of stainless.

I don't know anything about your 2 knives either, Georgiy, although the balisong appears to be Japanese perhaps, maybe Filipino built. ::shrug::
I'd like to ::welcome:: you to AAPK all the same! ::handshake::

You know, I also considered the Philippines to be the birthplace of balisongs. We were all told for a long time that it was there that the idea to invent such an unusual flipping knife was born. But recently I came across an interesting article where the author offers a different point of view. The article is called "The history of the Balisong. What little I know for it". ::groove:: I will not add a link to the site here, otherwise I will suddenly be banned. Just enter the title of the article in the search bar and get the result.

Here's what I found out about the butterfly knife with the "PATENT" stamp. This knife was produced by Böntgen & Sabin in Solingen, a German manufacturer active from 1867 to 1983.

Böntgen & Sabin. Solingen in 1900-1932. Brand names: 'Autocrat' (1899), 'Autofix' (1910/11), 'Bellring' (1909/10), 'Bonanza' (1907), 'Bonsa' (1902), 'Carrara' (1895), 'Clansman' (1902), 'Cosmopolit' (1895), 'Ezyshave' (1898), 'Flying Dutchman' (1897), 'Flying Scotchman' (1902), 'Football' and/or 'Fussball' (1907), 'Hector' (1908), 'Hindenburg' (1920), 'Keystone' (1923), 'Klosscut' (1909), 'Loreley' (1895), 'Midget' (1908), 'Mois' (1909), 'Nagaf (1909), 'Rhein' (1895), 'Sabina' (1907), 'Sarina' (1905), 'SSS' (1907), 'Zando' (1902).

BOENTGEN & SABIN SOLINGEN GERMANY c 1867-1983 Located in the Bonsa-Werk, Solingen, Germany. The company made knives using many different trademarks. One trademark used was "Bonsa." They went out of business about 1983.

Böntgen & Sabin AG, Stahlwarenfabrik, Solingen.
The Böntgen & Sabin AG Stahlwarenfabrik was originally founded by August Böntgen and Louis Sabin around 1870 and registered in 1876 (Carter, 2001; Goins & Goins, 1998).  In 1922 the Böntgen & Sabin AG Stahlwarenfabrik was advertising their trade name BONSA.  Very little information is available on August Böntgen.  Information on Louis Sabin, on the other hand, is plentiful.  Among the most interesting things is that Louis was a member of the German Reichstag and also represented the Union of Solingen Manufacturers’ Association.  The BONSA (Böntgen & Sabin) Company was behind the production of many Leverlocks.  BONSA Leverlocks can be found with stamps like: ‘BONSA’, ‘B. Svoboda’, ‘Helmut Hartenau’, ‘F. A. Bower Imp. Co.’, ‘G. C. Co.’, ‘IMCO’, ‘ROMO’, ‘Puma’, ‘RAMON’, ‘Solingen Cutlery’, ‘Stainless Import’, and ‘Schoepfer N.Y.-City’ to mention a few.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't Bontgen & Sabin, or maybe just one of them, granted the first European patent for the balisong in the 1830's?

August Böntgen and Louis Sabin patented his invention of the butterfly knife in Germany on April 13, 1880. The knife was called "FOLDING KNIFE WITHOUT SPRING". Then the patent was received in the USA on July 6, 1880 and the knife was named "CLASP-KNIFE". Later a new name "SPRINGLESS MARVEL POCKET KNIVE" appeared.

Interesting and informative post, Georgiy, thank you for your effort.
Your pearl handled bali's are very cool, especially the scissor model, and your snap-purse carrying case is equally cool, I haven't seen one of those in a long time, thanks for the memories. ::handshake::

Good stuff friend. Top notch research, I love the primary source documents. Way cool. I had a Bonsa stamped multitool knife that was super cool. It's passed on to another enthusiast now, but it was a great piece, I'm glad to see history supports what I thought when I saw the thing, which is that it was super cool and needed a new home in the light, free from rust and ambiguity.

Knife with the mark "F.*A.G." It was not possible to find the manufacturer. It is likely that this is Friedrich August Gobel

Friedrich August Göbel, Schlief- und Polier-Artikel-Fabrik; Solingen Höhscheid, Katternberger Strasse 270 in 1939. Brand names: FAG (registered in 1914, NO. 198578, classes 23 and 31); MONOPOL (cursive, uth November 1894, no. 1070, class 9b, re-registered in 1914 as nO. 191855 in classes 23 and 31), and RONDO (registered after 1925).
Trademark: 'fag, cursive, in an oval cartouche (1914, NO. 198578, above). Founded in 1884 and registered with the commercial authorities on 8th February 1908, Göbel once made grinding wheels and similar items; a business trading as 'Göbel Schleiftechnik KG was still wholesaling grinding and abrasive goods from Katternberger Strasse in 2001. Sheet steel scabbards for several types of Ersatz bayonet were made in 1915-16, during the First World War, and invariably bore the distinctive 'fag-in oval mark.
The business was owned in 1920 by the founder's widow and heirs; in 1928-30 by W. & C. Göbel; and in 1939 by Frau Wilh. and C. August Göbel. The 'fag' mark was acquired after the end of the Second World War by Kugelfischer Georg Schäfer and the Monopol brand name was used by Friedrich Baurmann (q.v.).
