I have a 1973 Case Muskrat with a Case shield which does not contain the circle. Does that indicate that it definitely has Delrin handles? The handles are jiged and dark in color being almost black. Any information would be appreciated.

Yes, if there is no oval inscribed around CASE then it is a delrin handled knife. Case began that in 1974 but they were still using up 1973 stamped blades at the time.

If I may, Steve didn't Case produce delrin handled knives prior to 1974 that had the same shield with the oval around "Case" as was used on the bone handled knives?

Yes that is correct...the shields were the same prior to some point in early 1974. Case began removing the oval on the delrin and other compostion and wood handled knives so that collectors would know that only genuine bone and stag handled knives would have the oval.

So a delrin knife from early 1974 (which means six dot or a seven dot if a leftover blade was used) might still have the oval.

In my experience you will see very few 6 or 7 dot knives in delrin with the oval, but they do exist.
