I attended a Blackpowder blanket shoot today. I was fortunate enough to win this throwing knife made by Matt O’Callahan Kearney NE. Matt makes some dandy throwing knives and hawks.

Now that’s the nicest throwing knife I’ve ever seen! It’s way too nice to throw. Wow!

Matt makes several different models of knives and hawks. His display at the Ne Muzzle loaders convention is impressive. I’m kinda like a kid in a candy store and like to shop his table. Winning one is a cool way to expand my thrower collection.

I shot muzzle loaders a lot back in the 1970s. Loved those blanket shoots. Blanket is thrown out on the ground and all shooters throw out a prize on the blanket. After the shooting match is over, high score takes their first choice, second highest next and so on. Usually it is what you see is what you get, but some people disguise their prize or make it seem like some item of low value when it is not. One time when I finished in the middle of the pack (as usual) I chose a small envelope made of Rawhide which everybody thought was just an envelope. It contained a $50 bill.

Very cool idea, camouflage something of higher value . These shoots are a lot of fun. I’m in charge of the Ne State Blanket Shoot July 13 2024. Different format this year with Rifle, Pistol, primitive archery along with knife and Hawk throwing. Each match an individual blanket. At the end I have a traveling trophy to go to the high total score. I have engraved a capper the winner will keep.

Is your group all fur trade era in costume and weapons (buckskinners), or are different historical eras represented?

Mostly fur trade era. Occasionally a colonial will show up and that’s fine too. Fur trade era more in keeping with history of Nebr. Lewis and Clark like a lot of easterners did not spend a lot of time in Nebraska.
