broken 6488 1940-1964

Post by zigszeit »

Was going to send my Case 6488 knife to case for repair.

all the blades are good but one tentioner and a handle is gone,

Is this a good idea or is there someone who can restore it with older parts?

Hi zigeszeit. Welcome to AAPK.

I moved your post to "General Knife Discussion" because it will get a lot more looks there.

It is my opinion you would be better served to find a good knife repairman who can provide original parts to repair your knife. If you send it to Case, they will most likely install a set of handles that are not close to matching the bone that came out on your knife when it was new. You will either end up with two handles that don't match or, if they replace both, handles incorrect for the time period in which the knife was made.

There are some avid Case collectors round here and some talented knife repairmen. Hopefully some of them will share their thoughts.

Once again, welcome to AAPK. ::welcome::

Thanks a lot for your help Phil.
I kind of thought it might be a bad idea. Glade I found this site think I'm going to enjoy it.
Anyone into old Chevy Blazers my son has a forum at ArizonaK5.com

I live in Arizona so it would be great to find someone close.

Thanks again

Zig,

That one is an easy restoration, and the blades are in excellent condition.

There are a couple knife mechanics here on AAPK that can fix that right up for you ::tu::

Nice knife, attractive bone handle ::drool::

Hi Zig.
Welcome to AAPK!

What do you want done to it your knife; just replace the handles?
I don't know where a guy could find the original handle material, but I have lots of material to replace handles, smooth bone, jigged bone, various exotic hardwoods, horn, stag. There are a lot of material I could use, the hard part is to match the material that is on there now.
The easiest and least expensive way to repair it would be to put a new set of bone handles on it.

Try Culpepper & Co. for jigged bone. They have updated their site and have the bone listed much better than they used to. You can probably still call and find stuff not on their website. http://www.knifehandles.com

You're welcome! ::tu:: ::tu:: I like that site. I called Culpepper & Co. seeking the Rodgers Bone Green Tea that GEC used in 2006 on the 73 Scout with the GEC tang stamp (440C). Apparently Culpepper may have been the company that supplied the Green Tea Bone and the Sheffield jigged Tobacco bone also on the 73 Scout with the GEC tang stamp (440C) - I suspect.

When I asked about the Green Tea bone and then the Tobacco bone - I was told that those were special short runs for a cutlery company and all the bone had been sent to the company. They would not tell me the company name, but in 2006 I can't think of another company that used short runs of these materials.

I know that GEC has used these materials since then so, I'm only guessing that Culpepper was the manufacturer.
