Thanks. That’s one I have had for long enough that I forgot it was a “Parker USA”. I really thought it was a late 70s K-Mart $1.00 Chinese knife. These threads have me revisiting some of my older purchases.

In early geologic time there were many species of the Osage orange family. Today, however, it stands alone as the only tree in the world that is the sole species in a genus.

Fossils indicate that Osage orange (Maclura pomifera) once grew naturally well outside its native range of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Missouri, and Arkansas. Then it retreated, perhaps ahead of advancing glaciers. Thousands of years later, because it was cultivated and planted by settlers as inexpensive fencing, it once again spread. Now, you may even find Osage orange growing in the eastern states and well into the Great Plains.

Wherever Osage orange grew, it had many a use. At one time, a Plains Indian brave would gladly trade a horse and blanket for a bow made of the wood. The reputation of such bows spread widely from the land of their makers-the Osage Indians of Arkansas and Missouri. Bows of this hard, strong wood even were found by explorers in use as far north as Montana. That's why in many parts of the nation the wood carries the name bois d'arc, French for wood of the bow. Americanized, the term becomes bowdark.

Harder and stronger than even white oak, Osage orange was once cut for railroad ties. While other woods for ties lasted but a few years, Osage orange served for 20! And many a Midwestern farm still has fence posts of the wood in place after a century.

Because of Osage orange's hardness and durability, it often was used for wagon wheels. Highly decay-resistant, it was even laid as paving blocks. In today's world, however, the wood is scarce as lumber. Yet sanded smooth and oiled, Osage orange beats all others for cutting boards that will stand up to a blade.

This is a great article except for the end of it where they say that Osage orange beats all for cutting boards that it will stand up to a blade. Osage orange is actually the worst wood for a cutting board, and for your tools, because it has a high silica content. It will damage your tools. Hard maple is actually the best for cutting boards and if you want an extremely hard cutting board you can cut your maple on end and use the end grain up instead of the long grain. I've been making cutting boards for over 25 years and was a chef for longer than that before I started woodworking. I would never use a board that hard, it would just damage my blades. And never use a plastic or glass cutting board. Besides damaging your blades they also harbor bacteria where wood cutting boards don't. Hope this helps, cheers.

Thanks so much. That OD green one seems so long ago. I'm hopeful I'm better. I will do some OD greens again. In this world of incredible burl woods, natural stags, mammoth, jigged bone, vintage micartas, there is still a special place for some basic, everyday available OD green done right.

The one downside of being hobbiest, and very slow is inventory. Somewhere soon I need to figure out some more efficient methods, if I ever want to realize any future goal of a more realistic business. tool upgrades planned include small mill and horizontal grinder. I think horizontal grinder will speed things up considerably. Much time is lost in changing configuration of my single grinder.

When you make knives like you do, ash, there's no way you'll ever be able to keep up with demand. The next thing you know, you have to send out advance release notices and restrict purchases to one per buyer just to keep all the collectors from killing each other to get one of your custom knives like Eric (ea42) and GEC.

Komwero modern Damascus VG10 core sandalwood scales. Out of a modest collection of knives that's the only one I have with wood scales. Now, that's not because I don't like wood scales, it's because most of the knives I buy don't come with wood scales and I haven't advanced enough to make my own...yet I have learned how to dye micarta and G10 Next is making my own scales!
