Junk knives

Okay guys I’m trying to learn how to work on knives and I recently had a guy tell me that I should get at least 50 knives that I don’t care about to start with. He said I should work on these before I touch any that I care about. I want to learn how to rehandle, change blades, etc. Here’s my question: Where do you find junk knives to practice on? There’s not much around me like flea markets and I have never done good at garage sales.

Not trying to be a wise guy but CarMan, you just missed out on a good start by not participating in the 2024 POS Exchange. There will be bunches of junk knives crossing the country for the next few days.
Who knows, somebody might have a few junkers to send your way.

Use anything from India, China, or Pakistan. Even if you have to buy them at Walmart or some other cheap store. At least you'll be starting with a knife that's not broken. Call the price "tuition" for knife mechanic's school.
** Sorry to any collectors of that stuff, but those folks want to eliminate your country and brainwash your kids.That's the bare truth and Its not worth some cheap pleasure. Rant over. J.O'.

I have been watching for junk knife lots, but they usually want a lot & shopping is ridiculous. But I have been watching. I even tried the Pigeon Forge knife show and they didn’t have many practice knives.

Anyway, auctions you pay shipping and fees and tax, go for local swap meets, estate sales, garage sales, thrift stores - junk knives are everywhere.

If you repaired at least half of what has been offered you, you will be off to a roaring start!
I don't know about repairing 50 junkers, but I do recommend repairing several junkers first. And that will give you quite a few good EDC knives to keep or sell.

If I need some junk knives I go into just about any Pawn Shop around here and ask to see their bucket of cheep knives. They know what I'm talking about and will sell them to me for next to nothing.

I’m hoping to get good enough for that. I have to figure out how to replace the scale pins & how to tell the difference between nickel silver and steel bolster pins. But, I have a weakness-I only collect, I have never sold a knife.

The same with me. For over 20 yrs now I have collected and I've traded with my brother and a few others, I've given knives away to family and friends but I've never traded a knife for money. Makes Cheryl mad!

I have ended up with lots of them from my days prowling the flea markets. I think you have a good idea about using them to practice on better to make a mistake on a junker than a 1925 Case XX ....
