Browning Model 55 Fixed Blade - From Browning or Custom

Post by Gumshoe »

I recently won an auction on this Browning USA Model 55 (1969-1970). It is a fully engraved Sportsman Series Hunting Knife with checkered handles. The Mark side blade is engraved/etched with a large spread Eagle, with a ribbon that says "Browning Arms Company, USA." The Pile side of the blade is engraved/etched with several running buffalo. The brass guard and pommel are also engraved. The swell center handles are finely checkered on both sides. The pommel is also engraved on the back with "1776 - 0580."

My question - is this a Customized Browning knife or something produced by Browning? BTW the sheath is not original, but a custom Crocodile sheath. The reason I ask is because of the number "0580" engraved on the end of the pommel. Is this one of 580 or more that were made?

I have been collecting Browning USA knives since 1969, and I have never seen one quite like this. It is very high quality. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Beautiful knife!
My guess is that was a bicentennial commemorative and you have serial number 0580 of of the series.

It appears that you are missing the rifle that goes with that knife!

Thank you ken98k. You are right - only the owner of that bicentennial rifle is missing the knife.
