Ai

Post by pearlgearl »

I am researching this knife; it is a Winchester 2630. Using the Bing browser will bring up the Bing copilot on the upper right had side of search window. This copilot uses AI and searches all the websites and then spits out an answer that utilizes all the information from the various returns to create an answer for you. I am wondering how close this copilot got to the description of my 2630. Copilot says this of the knife:

The Winchester 2630 is a vintage pocket knife with two blades. It features a teardrop jack design and fancy celluloid handles1. These old Winchester knives have a rich history and are sought after by collectors.

The stamp on your knife, which reads “Winchester, Trade Mark, Made In USA”, was used between 1919 and 19422. While it’s challenging to pinpoint the exact production year, this range provides valuable context. The knife’s pitting and wear add character, reflecting its journey through time.

Interestingly, another vintage Winchester knife from 1920 recently sold for $575. It had a 5.25-inch closed length, a clip blade, and Rodgers bone handles with a shield3. These knives evoke nostalgia and craftsmanship, making them cherished pieces for enthusiasts.

Whether you’re a collector or simply appreciate the history behind these knives, the Winchester 2630 holds a slice of the past in its well-worn blades and handles. 🗡️🌟

The handles are jigged bone, not celluloid. Apparently some truth there, but you need to have a knowledge to know where it is.
My assessment is that it's untrustworthy except for broad generalization.

That is what I was thinking the handles description didn't match. I was kind of just curious if it had gathered wrong info or I had a rehandled knife. Also if the year information was near target

I didn't look it up in a collector's book, so it could be, but the handles looked right to me.

Ai seems to me to be a way of searching the internet for information, some of it genuine stupidity (or artificial stupidity). Then presenting it as "artificial inteligence".
The results I have seen are falsehoods mixed in with facts - if you don't know better its easy to believe it all, facts and garbage. Hook, line, and sinker.

In other words it's a way of laundering stupidity. The old computer adage "Garbage in, garbage out" still applies. Lord knows, the internet is rife with garbage.

I look at a lot of knives on Ebay. Most now feature the AI descriptions. Sometimes they are funny but they are all worthless.

There is no substitute for studying a knife and then writing down what you see. I'd rather have a simple, amateur description of the actual knife under discussion along with some good clear photos than an AI generated bunch of smoke and mirrors BS. Even if you're far from an expert, you can still tell the potential buyer if it's bone or celluloid, if it's rusted so bad it won't open or if it opens and closes properly, if there are chips or cracks, AI can't do that.

If Ai is anything like Cortana you can be sure it's flawed without even trying it.
Just another marketing gimmick, if you ask me.
When it shows up on my screen I get a feeling of dread, just like it was a pop-up ad and one more thing to delete.
Just my negative 2 cents!

It sure didn't get much right , maybe the tang stamp dates? (I'm not well versed on Winchesters). The OP knife appears to be a sleeveboard design with bone handles, not a teardrop with celluloid. The problem with AI (currently) is that it's limited to what it can scour off of the web. That might be great for current events or items that have been available only in recent decades but for antiques it's useless. Most all of the historical information on antique knives is in printed form such as old catalogs or knife bibles such as Levine's guide and AI just doesn't have the access to it. Unless they can transfer all of the written record into the web AI will always be limited as far as the research of antiques and historical items goes. For other things I'm sure it will be a boon once they get the kinks worked out. It's definitely useless on Ebay.

Pearlgearl that's a fabulous looking knife!

Houston Price's Winchester catalog says 2630 is an Ebony, 3-5/8" Jack, with clip and pen blade combo. The sleeveboard is 2631. Looks like the "Intelligence" was "Artificial".

Winchester catalog cut. Proof positive that AI is full of @#&*#. Compare the catalog description to the AI description as quoted in the OP:

Well, it IS a two-blade jack!

BTW--FWIW, based on my very limited experience with them, my belief is that "knife bibles" aren't 100% infallible perfect sources of accurate information either. :|

True, even the best of them have a few errors. However the best are probably 99+% correct. As opposed to AI which in my experience is typically >50% wrong. ::facepalm:: JMO. As long as they’re mining the internet echo chamber I don’t know how they’re going to eliminate the garbage.

As has been said here by others, and I agree: A.I. knife descriptions on eBay are less than worthless. If a seller can't describe the knife (or can't be bothered to even try), I would actually prefer them to say something like "I know absolutely nothing about knives so if you have any questions about this knife, please contact me and I will do my best to answer and/or I will provide additional photos you may require in order to help you evaluate the knife"
Reading an A.I. description in a listing is a waste of my time and makes me annoyed. ::disgust::
