Where Are All The Remington Knife Collectors?

The Remington Corporation and the knives that they built have influenced the U.S. cutlery industry more than nearly any other manufacturer. From the time America was settled, to the end of WWI, American knife companies struggled to compete with Britain and German imports, but events that occurred during and after the First World War led to a great change in this phenomenon. Unprecedented opportunities arose, and Remington stepped up to seize the moment. In the process, they created some of today's most prized collectables. In an ironic twist, the next World War played the greatest role in ending the company’s domination of the industry.

Some good looking knives ! I would have to look at my references but don’t recall the R1613 having a bullet shield but rather a round shield. Although they called it a bullet knife. That is the second knife you pictured.

Any and all of the knives I have were my father’s collection. I have a book and at least one of my dad’s collector friends said Remington did not produce it with the bullet shield. Another said Remington absolutely did make it. And I have one of the price guides that is on the fence also. The people I personally spoke with may have been over 10 years ago. Thank you for the feedback. I know the auto is missing a pin. I’m pretty sure I have seen another toothpick in my dad’s collection with the round shield.
Thank you very much

Sargent’s Guide does indeed show R1613BL with a bullet shield. Shows how bad my memory is. Tim

Great looking Remington knives you are sharing.

The R1613 toothpick with the bullet shield is an authentic original Bullet. It is very rare with the bullet shield, but it was absolutely made this way.

My opinion regarding the R1173 baby bullet is that it is not an authentic original Bullet.

The rest of them are fine. The R1303 is very scarce to find with an etch.

You should post the 4 blade folding hunter in the Case forum with the blades open. ::drool:: ::drool:: ::drool::

Thanks to all who have commented about the bullets and the case knives my father collected. I am not sure if I have a picture of the case with all the blades open but will post pictures in the case forum also.
I do not have any of the bullets or the case knives in my possession anymore. They’re up for auction at Donley auctions not sure when. I have three other siblings and it is time to start liquidating dad’s stuff. The pictures I have posted so far are handy I took pics too inventory. I paid the estate for a gorgeous rh72 red handle and a shrade pull ball. I will keep posting as I go.

1613 round shield out of dad’s collection. I have a question the blade looks really clean. But Noel etching? Not sure if the blade is not full and has been cleaned.

The blade looks full length to me. It would have left the factory with an etch. It has likely been polished / cleaned which would explain the etch being absent. The etches became fragile as the etching process was changed from an acid etch to an "ink" etch. If you still are in possession of your R1303 you can slide the tip of your fingernail over the R1303 etch and likely feel an indentation "catch" as your fingernail crosses over the letters in the etch. The letters of an acid etch are "in" the blade vs. "on" the blade.

Attached is an example R1613 round shield for comparison.

So as to not do it, what would you have to clean it with to make it go away?

Obviously, something highly abrasive like sandpaper will remove an inked on etch, and if enough metal was removed, even an acid etch.

Some chemical metal polishing agents will also harm an inked on etch. If you cannot feel the etch with your fingernail, you should assume any kind of cleaning agent with cause deterioration to the etch. Essentially once an inked etch gets corroded, it is ruined. Acid etches are resilient and can be refurbished.

Wiping with a soft chamois doesn't hurt the etch.
