EC Simmons punch blade?
Hey Fellas, I found this EC Simmons today. Was the knife made this way or did someone grind it down. Punch seems legit. Any information?

Barry, Get a good pic from the tip end. It could be just a modified punch or an old pen blade reworked. The round shape of the tang is like a pen blade whereas a punch blade usually has pointed "kick". If it's an original, unaltered blade, someone here should recognize it or have a Simmons catalog. Interesting find. Don’t recall ever seeing a punch/awl like that. Typesetters blades and pipe cleaners are similar but different. Hope someone will recognize what its purpose was.
Where’s Dimitri?

Ken, Do you have a typesetter's example? I've not seen one but I'd like to. I have a knife with a strange pick too; haven't been able to I D it for sure.
Thanks, John

Here are a couple of poor pictures of the punch on a Simmons era Keen Kutter scout. I believe this is a pre 1923 knife.

Sadly I don’t have any with the typesetter’s blade. I’ve bid on a few but apparently I’m too cheap to win one.Ridgegrass wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2024 11:40 am Ken, Do you have a typesetter's example? There’s a good example above in Dan’s post. Those I recall were made by Charles Langbein and I believe Schrade made some also. A search here for Langbein will find some beauties. Like this one from Joe:

Thanks Ken. I do remember seeing that type of blade. It appears to have more shoulder than the one Treasure Trawler posted. Maybe his is Simmons '' version or not. I'll get a hands on look at it, we live near each other. Interesting.

Re: EC Simmons punch blade?
Thanks Danno and Scout. After seeing the Simmons scout punch and reviewing the "Knives with Punches" thread I'm leaning toward it being a ground down secondary blade, partly because the "Kick" on most punch blades is a pronounced angle and this one is a rounded shoulder. It doesn't look like a knife that would have a pipe stem cleaner and it looks too thin to be for hard applications. Maybe some old feller had a special need and made himself a tool ???
