Using DC current to remove rust

Has any one else used DC power to clean rust off?

You hook the positive to the knife and the negative to a scrap piece of steel and submerge in salt water. Be carefully we are playing with electricity and water.

I have used this alot on really rusted pliers, knifes and other tools.

I used washing soda, not saltwater. It works on line of sight to the electrode. So it is best to have the item surrounded by the electrode. Googling electrolysis for rust removal will lead to a ton of information. You are basically plating backwards.

I have heard of it. I don't know if it removes rust evenly on knives.

I have used that on all sorts of rusty steel. The item to be de rusted get the negative and the positive goes to the scrap steel. I use washing soda. You do not want any non ferrous metal like an aluminum knife pommel in the mix. Will eat it big time.

Electrolysis can also damage surfaces. If used at all, it should be used very carefully. I prefer chemical rust removal and careful abrasion.

I’ve never and would never try it with a pocket knife or with salt water.

If you have a digital smart battery charger it won’t work. You need an old school analog charger.
