camillus #72

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. It also becomes the latest example to be added to my collection. It is a CAMILLUS 72, three blades, two tang stamps, two blade etches, two bolster stamps, 3 5/8" closed, swelled center, a long matchstrike and blade pull, two springs, advertising, "whittler" pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp (double line) says, "CAMILLUS (over) New York (over) U.S.A." The main blade back tang stamp says "72", the pattern number. The main blade front etch says, "Chattanooga Coca-Cola" The third blade back etch says, "World's First - Coca-Cola Bottler" The left front bolster is stamped "040" The right front bolster is stamped "1992" The main handle side says "Coca-Cola" The main blade has no half stop, but it does have a good opening and closing snap. The secondary blade has a weak half stop, but it has a good opening and closing snap. The third blade has a good half stop, along with a good opening and closing snap. This pocket knife came with a box and the paperwork. I do not know if this is the box and or the paperwork that this pocket knife originally came with. This pocket knife is in EXCELLENT condition. I did NOT clean it at all. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

I've been collecting stockman pattern knives for a few years, and have several dozen, including some nice Camillus and Imperial Frontier patterns. Recently, doing a search here for "stockman" knives, I saw a used Camillus listed as a stockman by a dealer I had done business with, and when I opened the offer, it was a Camillus 72. I was not familiar, but it was listed at a reasonable price, and the photos looked good. The knife has been carried, as the Delrin is somewhat scratched, and the main blade appeared to have never been sharpened, although the edge had been dulled a bit in use. The secondary blades seem to have factory edge. I cleaned it up, sharpened the main blade, and in handling it, I realized it was like a whittler. Did a bit of research on the 72, and then saw this mammoth thread. I do agree, it is a very nice knife, slim, well proportioned, and all the shaping a grinding was expertly done. I have read about 1/10 of the posts and find it all very interesting. It would appear to be a 72Y but no "Yellow-Jaket" etching. This one must have been late production. What year do ya'll think? Glad I stumbled on this one.

Great score! Tang stamp is 89 to 07 when they closed. Be aware that they have a way of accumulating. I carry one everyday.

That's a pretty old knife, Skip. Whoever owned it must have loved it, but opened and closed it a lot! I have a Cattaraugus that looks new, but has no snap on the main blade. The owner must have just carried it around opening and closing it all the time. Another good save you made though! ::tu::
