Survival Knives

[OLDE CUTLER]

Back in the 1970s, Charter Arms made this survival tool which they called a "Skatchet". One could carry it in your gear and when needed, a green stick about 1 inch in diameter was cut and the end was whittled down round. Then the handle threaded into the coarse threads in the head. It came with a leather belt sheath.

I chose to carry my SAK and Cold Steel SRK knife along with a Sog folding shovel and my hatchet,
Everything worked out great

I love the long handle axe but not practical to carry backpacking,
I’ll stick with a folding saw.

Looks like the head comes off easily, like a pick axe. Pack the head away, use the shaft for a walking stick.

There are a lot of newer survival knives that are pretty badass. The Gerber StrongArm has been around for a while now but is an awesome knife for the money. I also really like the ESEE P4/P6. This is a tried and true knife that gets the job done.

Carried this for a few backpack trips. Kept a few WP matches, hooks, line, etc. in the screw off pommel/hollowed out handle. Decided it was too pretty and retired it.

I would have to say a more modern Chris Reeve Survival (now discontinued[?]. And he's a local!).

Looks like a couple of S&W knives designed by Blackie Collins.I have a similar fixed blade but it has a stag handle that is not hollow.The 6060 is a great knife.

Something in carbon steel to strike a ferro rod.
Something with a few tools like a saw and an awl.
Something that can baton wood and drive in stakes.

I have an ESEE 4 that I pair with a SAK Farmer.

If I need lighter weight I go with an Izula 2 and a SAK Walker.

My favorite woods knife has a 4” blade, 1/8” stock, micarta handle, and has a Sabre/ almost full flat grind.

Noticed almost two years ago I posted in this thread about the “Magnum” survival knife designed and made by G. W. Stone. I was lusting over it at the time. Since then I’ve acquired one. The knife is near mint but the sheath is dry rotted, so I will have to try to get a duplicate made. Click to enlarge. Stone designed it as a survival knife for Viet Nam War pilots. The blade is 6 inches long and heavy, with the spine having a hatchet-beveled edge. The blade is intentionally wide, to enable digging if necessary. Handle is linen micarta.

This hand made knife by Jeff Spivey serves very well as a combination hatchet, saw, and knife. The bi-directional saw teeth will rather easily cut thru metal that is not too thick. They are said to be, and I believe, the most effective saw teeth ever put on a knife. The Sabertooth (formerly two words) was carried by troops in Iraq (100) and lesser numbers in Afganistan. The blade is 7 1/2". On two trips Mr. Spivey rode 4000 miles on horseback crossing the U.S. West to East and South to North. This was in the 60s. I highly recommend the telling of his adventures in the book Wind Drinker.

After doing some recent revisions to my tactical pack, I decided to redo the knife options I was using. I most commonly choose 3 knives to perform different tasks and offer redundancy. The reconfigured lineup is a Craftsman (Schrade) 7 inch sheath knife, Buck Bucklite 426, and a Victorinox Camper. The Craftsman rides clipped on to the side of the pack in a nylon sheath with polypro liner, the Bucklite 426 is in a nylon holster on the front shoulder strap, and the SAK is secured with a tether to the pack while riding inside a pocket. The Craftsman is big enough to do heavy cutting, some chopping, and with a wooden baton can do wood splitting. The Bucklite 426 is a 110 with light weight handle material, and the SAK can handle most smaller cutting and other operations that the SAK is known for. I think those 3 pretty well cover it.

Reading through this thread gave me the impetus to put together a kit for our vehicle similar to the one my wife had done for the winter(blankets,dried food,water,matches,tool kit,extra gloves).
Here is what I came up with:
Gerber folding saw(w/extra blade).
Victorinox large slim SAK(to fit inside saw sheath).
Buck 186 Titan(titanium frame dis-assembles for cleaning)clips to saw sheath & partially in place by sheath flap).
Ontario SP-10 bowie(10 inch blade;1/4 inch thick;black finish).
This will become part of the car tomorrow.
Could be a good backpacker set as well. JMHO.
