Does that mean, not only should we store our celluloid knives separate from the non-celluloid knives, but we should store the celluloid one's separate from each other?

Did this get answered - I am not sure I picked it up if it did. Additionally, where or how would you store these?

The answer is yes. Nitric acid vapor (gas) is created when celluloid deteriorates. One celluloid gone bad will contaminate the others stored with it. Whether the others are celluloid or not is immaterial. Outgassing vapors are the culprit.

As for how to store celluloid items, I keep mine sitting around on open shelves, away from sun or other bright lights. That allows air to freely circulate around them. And I can keep an eye on them. I like them - I don’t avoid them but I respect the risk. I have a strict self-imposed limit on what I will pay for one. No more than I am willing to flush down the toilet if it goes bad!

To be honest I don’t know of any scientific experiments or research - what I do is based on anecdotal evidence. The celluloid knives I’ve had that self destructed were all stored in an enclosed container, typically in a box or roll with other knives. One group was in a glass front display hanging on a wall. In every case by the time I recognized there was a problem, all the knives in that box, roll, or display were damaged.

I get kinda tickled when you tell someone about Celluloid and they dont believe what you are telling them when you can clearly see the beginning of outgassing. Some get what their ego deserves.
