Case knife without a tang stamp

Post by edgy46 »

Has anyone ever seen a Case knife without a a tang stamp? Today i was asked by a trader to look at a knife. Since i am without pictures, i will try to describe it. It is four and one fourth (plus) inches long. Three blade stockman with square bolsters. Never carried or sharpened. Showing some grey areas on the blades. On the reverse tang of the master blade is 6375. The bone handles look correct (reddish). The shield has case in an oval, open c and a flat top s and is pinned on. It looks to me like a factory error, But could a knife without the trademark stamp go through the system? I made a bet that this is a correct knife, time and hopefully more knowledge will make this bet a good one.

You will see Case knives missing a tang stamp as a factory error but very infrequently.

I have also seen a very few XX era Case knives with the stamp upside down.

Thank you for your information Knifeaholic. Now I will have to wait a couple of weeks to show it off and try to date it. My guess from the finish and fit is USA or early dots. Thanks again

Like Steve said, it is a factory error. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. I once owned a Case Canoe with no tang stamp but from the rest of the knife you could tell it was made in the late 60's to early 70's. I also own a stag Trapper from the 1977 Blue Scroll Set without a tang stamp. I wish I hadn't sold the Canoe. Since I regret that sell, Let's just say I'll be hanging onto that Stag Trapper.

After reading the section on shields in Steves book I think it is 65 thru 71 . I also checked my case knives and found no flat top s after 71. Of course this a very small sample. If and when I get pictures I will post them. Elvis do you ever go to Schomy's in West Carrolton.

Elvis Central Ave at Crossover Rd. It is in an old roberds store. There is an antique mall in the front of the building. Around by the loading dock is the entrance to Schomy's. 8 till 3 every Saturday. I use exit 47 off I75 Southbound. Less than one mile from the Interstate. I will probably be there on the 24th. I will be the tall guy with the pretty twelve year old with me. P.S. four dollars to get in, but you can trade and sell without being hassled. Entry is from Crossover Rd only.

I have what should be a Case 3347 stockman that has no tang stamp or model number on the blade. It looks exactly like other Case knives of that model with the exception of the blank tangs. I bought it from one of the sellers here on AAPK who informed me of the lack of stampings prior to my purchasing it. I wanted it for the novelty of it.

I bought a Boker last year, brand new razor jack, with the 140 year shield and not a mark on the tang. So I'm not surprised when a Case or any other knife sometimes turns up without a stamp.

Bill;

I grew up in Michigan and Ohio and went to a lot of knife trading sites in Ohio...this was in the 70's to early 80's. There was a place we called Schomy's but it was in Franklin Ohio...gun and knife trading open only on Saturday nights. I wonder if its the same place just a different location?

I saw this knife in an auction catalog and thought maybe it was kind of different, put in a bid and won the knife at a very reasonable price. I see this subject has been brought up before and that knives like this do exist. I thought from the auction pictures that the knife didn't have a tang stamp. Like you, my first thought was someone had removed it. I have the knife in hand and feel 100% certain that knife was never stamped. You can examine it with magnification and there is no hint of the word Case. I thought maybe in the auction pictures there were dots used to date the knife showing, but those turn out to be very shallow pits. The knife still had the original lubrication from the factory on the blade tangs that had turned brown and crusty. I have just started to clean it up with toothpicks and rubbing alcohol. There is rub on the tang area where the blade was opened and closed and maybe a few vertical machining marks, but no indication of a stamp at all. According to my micrometers the blade is .130 thick at the tang and that is the same thickness I see on other Case trappers and I think would be considered full?

I have recently purchased a knife without tang numbers, and no shield. It’s apparently an early 1904-15 tang stamp… WR Caes & Sons Bradford, PA. Odd to me that I can’t see tang numbers to confirm pattern and dates. Also rare to not have a shield I think. Anyone know anything about this one?

Sorry to tell you but that’s a fake. You’ve already pointed out some of the red flags. The jigging is wrong. Does not look like a Case pattern/tooling - bolsters are too long.
