intersting norvell tang

Post by pearlgearl »

I have a nice little fishtail with an intersting tang stamp and would like some more information if you all can provide that. It is a Norvell Shapleigh with clear tangs. On one side of single blade you see the normal Shapleigh HDW CO with DE in the diamond, however, the opposite side tang appears to read Norvellsees.

Sweet knife! I think it's, "Norvell's Best."
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

It’s a beauty, Earl! The only one I have is stamped “Norvell-Shapleigh St. Louis” on the tang. Since yours says “Norvell’s Best,” I’d just guess it’s more rare. Norvell was on the tang from 1902-1917. Goins only mentions “Norvell’s Best” as one of several brand names they used over the years. Would seem to indicate a better quality knife than the typical “Norvell-Shapleigh,” doncha think?

Nice old knife pearlgear. I think that most old D-E knives were Empire made. Pictures of D-E made by Empire that I have. Hope the stamps are readable.
