Stockman Syndrome: A Strange Bond

Is anyone on the AAPK forum suffering from Stockman Syndrome? Stockman Syndrome is a rare psychological condition that makes some knife collectors buy more and more Stockman knives, even when they already have more than they can keep track of ... This is a syndrome that affects people known clinically as "Knife Nuts" and should not be confused with Stockholm syndrome*.

Do you have a several sleeves, or boxes filled with Stockman knives, yet you find yourself on the AAPK member's store looking for a new one to add to your already huge collection? Do you carry two or more Stockman knives on you at any given time? Do you feel that there is an unbreakable "bond between you and your Stockman knives? ... You may have Stockman Syndrome....

The bad news? There appears to be NO cure...

I bought this old Ka-Bar last Sunday.

I realized some time ago that I have this strange syndrome that compels me to bond with stockman knives.

I have not, I repeat, NOT opened any of my knife storage to show off these 7 Stockman knives, but instead these are just what were sitting on top of my nightstand.

Stockman syndrome, Andromeda Strain, Starman and Meteor Crater.........you folks in Arizona sure face a variety of threats. I have never been affected by Stockman Syndrome, I suppose I have natural immunity.

Boxes, I keep mine in boxes. Generally speaking, I can only see the top layer of the stockman contents, so the symptoms aren’t as obvious (unless you look in my pockets, or on my headboard, or the dresser, or the end table beside my sofa…)

But most of them are in boxes. Big boxes, cause I favor the senior and jumbo sizes.

The Stockman has been my favorite pattern for as long as I can remember. I carried an old Henckels Stockman for years, and when I finally lost it I replaced it with a nice old Case Muskrat. Nice knife, but it never really felt right. I recently found a Buck 307 in a toolbox drawer, cleaned up, and have been carrying it for a while now. I'm much better now.

Here are a few of mine--

1. A pretty Steel Warrior Black Lip MOP, a Bull, a Böker and a Gutmann

2. A Colonial, a Keen Sutter, and three Camilli (If that's not the plural of Camillus, it should be...)

3. A couple Case and a couple Camilli that I have re-handled

4. A Rough Rider kit-built, two more Camilli (I do like that brand) and a Böker, all re-handles by me

Do the 72s count as Stockman patterns? I think of them that way, but I'm not much of a purist.

I do not believe that the 72 counts as a Stockman. Camillus called it a whittler, though it is not really a whittler pattern. I believe it is simply it's own pattern, a 72, and it can fit in with whatever collection you place it in!
