Identify grandad’s knife

This knife was passed down to me from my grandfather after he died in 1975. I was told it was a favorite deer hunting knife…probably in the 1950’s? One scale was missing so I replaced the scales. I would like to know what it was called and about when it was made. Thanks so much!

Hello & Welcome to the AAPK! We're glad you came.

I'm a Case Fan but with little knowledge of older Case Fixed blade knives. What I can say is that Case is a very popular American knife brand and that they are still in the knife production business today in Bradford, PA. Which also happens to be the home of another famous brand called Zippo who bought and now holds the Case brand.

As for your knife, I'm sure another AAPK member with more knowledge will soon be along to help you out. Just give it a day or two. And if all else fails, there are books about the Case brand if you can get your hands on one of those.

Knives are a very fun Hobby to get into so feel free to stick around and learn more about knives even after you find out more about yours. Good job on the new scales.

Those scales do look nice - they have a very appealing grain pattern. What kind of wood did you use?

Very cool knife and excellent job, to AAPK! I think trying to date Case fixed blades is a mixed bag because there were so many exceptions. But hopefully someone will be along to help you soon.

Your knife is a model 147 that originally came as a sheathed set with a marlin spike for knot work and rigging. Though meant to be a marine use knife set the steel obviously worked well for a hunting knife. Earlier models had ebony handles ands later handles were walnut.
