Blade for a ???????

Anyone know what this fits? Blade is 4 and 1/4 inches long. Must be from a knife with interchangeable blades as the sheath shown has a space for the knife folded plus this extra blade stored in a slot behind the knife. There are no markings on the blade.

Strange that the blade has such a shallow grind. Looks almost like a factory blade that wasn’t ground at the factory. Maybe a Dakota or other knife that pivots open like a Barry Wood or or Colt knife.

I should have included that the blade is only .050" thick.

Not flexible at all. I was trying to picture how a lock mechanism would work based on the curved slot. Maybe a push button? After looking at the Barry Wood and similar rotary knives, that must be what it is.

I see some on eBay go for decent money and with a lot of bids. Seems a bunch of them are made in Seki city Japan, and well built.

In researching this blade, the Barry Wood patent, and the design used by Parker I have learned some very interesting points on this knife design. The design of the Parker swivel handle lock blade knife differs slightly from the Barry Wood knives. This may be so Parker could avoid patent infringement or there may be other reasons. The Barry wood Patent shows that his design used a thicker blade and 2 pins in the rotary locking mechanism. See the Barry Wood patent here: https://patents.google.com/patent/US3702501A/en. The heads of the pins passed each other when rotating the handles to open the blade. The Parker knife blade I have is only .050" thick, so they opted for the alternate locking method with one pin. Instead of the second pin, Parker used the spacer to provide the kick when the blade was closed, and to limit the blade movement to full open and locked. This spacer served to replace the spring in what would be an ordinary slip joint knife. The spacer has no spring function in this design.
The black sharpy line shows the spacer and how it has the kick built in to prevent the cutting edge from contacting the spacer.

Barry Wood certainly came up with an innovative design for a swivel handle lockblade knife, which was patented in 1972. Parker modified it some what and produced their own version in the 1990s.

That's the plan, probably a winter project. The pieces shown are some .032 steel, I would like to use brass or nickel silver liners when I do it for real. I don't know if that would be stiff enough to resist bending because of the way the handles have to be pried apart slightly to open the knife. The Parker version looks like they used 1 piece all metal construction. I will have study more of the Barry Wood made ones.

I have been fiddling around with this design to see if I could come up with a workable model. As shown the mechanics of this knife is quite different from a traditional slip joint.
This shows the kick and how the blade rests against it when closed

Shows the blade in the fully open position and how the blade rests against the front side of the kick.

Shows the pin that travels with the handle to turn the blade out.

Shows the pin in the open position.

The handle is rotated in the direction of the arrow to open and lock.

Fully closed

Shows the pin that drops into a hole to lock the knife open, and then closed.
