Buzz Lightyear from SMKW

Kershaw began its foray into the knife business sometime during 1974. The company was originally based in Portland Oregon, but most early knives were manufactured in Japan. The first US manufacturing plant was opened in 1997 & the company currently offers knives made in the U.S., Japan, & China. Pete Kershaw (an ex Gerber salesman) started the business.

Just in time for Christmas. Anyone have one? $20 @ SMKW or $80 on eBay. ::mdm::

I don't trust those con men at SMKW. Some years ago they had a big sale, I ordered a bunch of "on sale" knives for 5-600 dollars. Knives never came, I got a notice that they all were sold and out of stock. It took me four months to get a refund from them. Never again! At their store they sell fake indian artifacts and other antiques, they don't care who they rip off.

I quit buying ANYTHING from SMKW years ago, after visiting their flagship store in Sevierville, TN. For miles (hours) before getting there, there are roadside signs advertising the store. At that time they were hyping the NKCA collection and museum on display at the store. Seeing that was my main reason for going there.

After viewing the lower level retail displays most of which was “Made in China” junk, we went upstairs to see the museum. Which consisted of display cases into which had been piled hundreds of knives, strewn in disarray with little or no curation, documentation, or any type of explanation. Just knives that appeared were hastily dumped there. Have you heard the term “tourist trap”?

I still receive their mail catalogs, but not sure why as it’s been years since I’ve ordered anything. ::shrug::

I visited the blue roof building back in 2011, first and only trip. The knife museum was organized when I was there, displays grouped by knife brands. But I understand all of that is long gone,

Redrider,
About a 4 hr drive from me. Been there a number of times and it’s always been a great experience. It’s been a long time since I’ve been there however, and if the knife museum is gone, it’s a shame. It was a fantastic collection of cutlery.

The knife museum there has been closed for at least seven years. All the knives have been scattered around, there was no accounting done to ever track them. Imagine what all the folks who donated knives to the museum think about their donations now.
