A long time good friend of mine, Jim - a 99 year old WW2 Marine veteran, has the “knife” pictured below in his box of “stuff”. In this box is some stuff that belonged to his father. His father was also a Marine of WW1 vintage. He’s not sure what it is or where it came from.
The knife is made of wood and looks to be solid black, not painted or stained. Ebony? It’s 16 inches long and ½ inch thick at the handle.
Those 6 disks, 3 on each side of the handle are about 7/16 inches in diameter and look to be mother of pearl or abalone.
Looks to be some old tape helping to prevent the crack in the blade from getting worse. That tape has been there a long time.
Any thoughts on what it might be or where it came from, value, etc so I can pass the info on to Jim and his 90 year old wife.
Many thanks.
Bill

Re: What is it?
Just guessing but and old piece made for tourist trade. MOP disks suggests from a coastal area where pearl is available. Maybe African coast of Philippines?
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Re: What is it?
Very logical explanation.
Many thanks for your input. Yeah, sounds very logical, maybe some sort of souvenir thing?
