Old and Obscure Brands

Used to think my sheepsfoot jacks were hard to find but how about a spey blade jack, I've got spey barlows in the collection but this is the first jack I've seen or found.

Buffalo Cutlery Co which was the brand for Buffalo Wholesale Hardware Company in Buffalo NY. Goins states 1900 to 1920, they did not make knives and I've found information stating they had knives made in Germany and by Schrade Cut co, this one sure has what looks to be early Schrade pick bone. 3 5/8"with what appear to be full blades. It was badly rusted so I had to do a little more cleaning than I like.

That is some nice pick bone, if that thing was badly rusted, you sure made it look good. That is a nice stamp to add to your pile. Always glad to see your posts, John, there doesn't seem to be nearly as many pics showing up in "knife lore" as before.

Ike this thread has really slowed down. I posted a knife several weeks ago and it never got a response. Either it was slow that week or no one liked the knife?
This is my favorite thread for sure, I enjoy all the ole knives.

Thank you all for the comments. I was really happy to land this one as I had never seen a spey 2 blade jack before. Eric confirmed it was made by Schrade Cut Co and Buffalo was a major contract for them, they bought both first quality and seconds, the seconds have the tangs ground and are restamped.

Ike, the first picture is how I received it, very dirty and with active rust, the trick is to stop the rust and clean it without losing the history of the knife and making it look over cleaned.

The Hatch Co.Bridgeport,Ct. It’s in pretty good shape for it’s age, almost to good?? I believe it is 1880s to 1895. I thought maybe the stag was a replacement but if it is it was quite a while ago. Thanks for looking and your comments.

Bill, nice one, The Hatch knives are hard to find, not around that long and eventually bought out by Challenge if I remember right. I think the knife is ok, tang stamps look good, it has been heavily cleaned which can make determining if it is original difficult.

Wow, Bill that one is something, very nice. I only own a couple Hatch, both in Ebony. My "Holy Grail" knife would be a Hatch from Buchanan, Mi.

Thanks Ike. I have another Hatch but it is bone. A friend of mine has one and its bone as well. That is the only ones I have seen in person. That could be the holy grail for sure to find one from Michigan. Thanks again Ike.

Very recently, this advertising pocket knife arrived and it now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. It will also join my general pocket knife collection. It was in a group or lot of pocket knives that I bought. But, I did NOT buy the group or lot to obtain this particular pocket knife. It is a QUICKPOINT, one blade, one tang stamp, 3" closed, tip bolsters, advertising, pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says "QUICKPOINT (over) ST. LOUIS" The main handle side says "RALSTON - STRAIGHT SHOOTERS" with graphics of two checkerboards, each with a blue emblem. The blue emblem on each is the movie cowboy Tom Mix's brand. Overall, this pocket knife is in GOOD+ condition. It did NOT need any cleaning at all. I took some pictures and here it is.

Recently, this advertising pocket knife arrived in a large group or lot of pocket knives that I bought. I did NOT purchase the group or lot to obtain this particular pocket knife. But, it did turn out to be a keeper. It is an Autopoint, two blades, one tang stamp, 3 1/8" closed, advertising, pocket knife. The main blade tang stamp reads "Autopoint - CHICAGO - USA" The main handle side says "COASTAL PLAINS SUPPLY CO. - DALLAS-PR-3906-PR-1377" The other handle side says nothing, it is blank. This is my second pocket knife, in a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT pattern or style, that advertises this particular company or business. Despite having a couple of very tiny cracks in the handles, this pocket knife is still in GOOD condition. I gave it a very minor cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

Recently, this pocket knife arrived in a group or lot of pocket knives that I bought. I did NOT purchase the group or lot of pocket knives to obtain this particular pocket knife. It is a VAN CAMP 708, two blades, one tool (a punch or awl), two tang stamps, 3 1/2" closed, two springs, cattleman, pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade tang stamp says "VAN CAMP (over) USA" The main blade back tang stamp says "708" The main blade appears to have had the tip reshaped. The secondary blade has two tiny nicks in it. The tool has seen some use. The shield is a replacement, it is NOT original to the knife. Overall, this pocket knife is still in FAIR+ condition. I gave it a minor cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.
