The only information I could find on this type knife was that it was used in the veterinary practice .when shown to my vet he called this knife simply barbaric .lol

Some older Swiss Army knives had a similar tool. It is known as a marlinspike or a sacking needle. Very cool knife you have there!

It's a traditional farmer's knife, primarily found and produced in German-speaking countries--especially Switzerland and Germany. Victorinox and Wenger produced them alongside SAKs for many years.

As Dan said, the tool is a sacking needle. It's designed for sewing up burlap sacks and other heavy materials.

Thank you for your responses.the practice of using seton needles was deemed unethical in the horse racing industry and banned starting with the 20022 crop of foals.Not only does the needle look barbaric but the saw blade looks to be made to cut threw flesh and bone . Did Levine give any information on the dates this type of knife was reproduced and country of origin ?

The needle is 3 inches long and 7/8 inches wide at the eye .The saw blade is also 3 inches wide and the teeth are made to cut bone .I tried it out last fall field dressing a deer .removed the hoofs off the hams and shoulder like a charm .
