I saw this listing on Ebay and immediately thought it was poorly done fake :'

I believe we are looking at cobbled together or an intentional fake knife. What do you think ?

The tang stamp in one picture appears to show a pattern number 6254, which should be for 'bone' covers and a Trapper frame. If it were stag the first number should begin with '5'. In another picture, it appears that the tang has been shaved. If you look closely, it appears that you can actually see 'remainders' of a prior tang mark above what I believe is a cold stamp poorly done where someone had trouble with the '5' or '6' as the first number of the pattern # on this blade. The pattern number on the second blade appears to be 6265 versus 6254 on the first blade. The tang stamps have two different 'S' or 'Lightning S' in the CASE imprint. One tang mark has 10 dots below the CASE XX marking from 1970, the other has 4 dots above the CASE XX marking from a 2020-2029 series blade/tang stamp.


I know just enough about Case Cutlery knives to be skeptical. What do you experts have to say, is this a fake, or is it Case knife put together at the factory with parts from two different years ? I believe it to be a fake.

That 4th picture is a completely different knife, must have gotten in there by mistake. I've actually done the same thing a time or two.

Seller was asked about my concerns, he has since added or updated listing, stating that stag was added when knife was rehandled.

I cannot speak to the rest of it, but as far as the tang looking shaved, I don't see any evidence of that. The tang does look different on a saber-ground blade, that is all. The pattern number does look odd, but likely has just been buffed. I am no expert, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Picture 4 is clearly a different knife.

GENUINE Ten Dot 1970 Case Stag 5265 Large Folding Hunters get quite a premium in the market. That said, the listed knife is not a GENUINE Ten Dot 1970 Case Stag Large Folding Hunter. The seller admits this in his revised/updated description. It probably originally had Pakkawood handle covers and was rehandled in Stag. That is why it carries the 6265 pattern stamp. And, either the person who installed the Stag covers or someone since decided to do a lot of hand torching of the Stag.

The knife has value. Just not the value it would have if it were a GENUINE Case 1970 Ten Dot 5265.

I don't know how other people feel but I probably would not buy a
re-handled knife that does not match the tang stamp. If it was
very, very cheap like a few bucks I might buy it. It would
just bug the heck out of me.
