That's a real survivor. I don't think its from 1827, likely closer to 1927. The handles may be hard rubber (gutta percha) Can't tell from the picture. I don't know the mark. My guess would be British just from the pattern. It appears that someone ground off the marlin spike or replaced it with the small stub. Maybe the main blade was also replaced as the pin appears to have been worked on. Maybe someone on this site will recognize it. Good luck and welcome. J.O'.

A navy knife or sailing knife.The spike on your's appearzbroken off and reshaped. The spike was used to untie knots in rope.

A boatswain/bō'sun is the guy who tracks ship maintenance and the log, from the tall shop sailing era. I suppose he was also responsible for the rigging ropes.

As promised, I want to show you my little collection. All knives were delivered in a terrible condition. I haven't done anything with the last one yet. I want to find a donor and replace the left pad. There is another Solingen with a very beautiful pattern on the blade, but it is under repair. I change the full lining on the handle, the old ones were completely killed. I will definitely show it, but a little later.

A marlinspike is as useful today for the mariner as it was in olden times. It is not to be viewed as a quaint tool. The marlinspike is intended to be pushed with force, and not levered with force.
