Camillus no. 99 Uswa Dist 28 Frank J. Valenta

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Camillus no. 99 Uswa Dist 28 Frank J. Valenta

Post by RunningH »

Found this at a local thriftstore in Oslo, Norway. I found out who Frank J Valenta was. But I can not seem to Find out if this is a personal print or advertisement. Nor if it raises or lowers the value. Due to the print of the name I feel this is a newer model 99. Help anyone?

The tang stamp is the last one Camillus used before they went bust (1989-2007). I can't really be of help with the etch, but I'd suspect it was done at the factory and is more of an advertising knife. Personalization, in my experience, is more likely to be done with engraving. Of course, take the preceding with a grain of salt. An expert might have additional information and/or a different opinion. :) Nice find; it would have come home with me, too! ::tu::

Thanks Dan. I’ve found some info on Frank Valenta, and the 28 district. They change their name and merge with other union districts in 1995. Frank Valenta served as district director for 20 years. So with your info in mind, I think it must have been made between 1989 and 1995. Whether it was a gift for long service, or from Camillus for his work for steel workers in Ohio I don’t know. Or it could just be advertisment handed out by Valenta.

Hi RunningH, welcome to AAPK! ::welcome::
I think Dan has given you accurate information on the knife. There is nothing more I can add, except that I am surprised to find that you found the knife in a thrift store in Oslo, Norway!

My best friend's family was from Norway and I know the Norwegian appreciation for a good knife, so I guess I'm not terribly surprised that they should have a Camillus in Norway. After all I have several find Norwegian knives in my collection.

I hope you will stick around AAPK, and post often. I would love to see other knives in your collection. We always appreciate good knife pictures here on AAPK!

Welcome aboard!

Thank you for the warm welcome. There are many good knife producers in Scandinavia. I am refurbishing some Mora carpenter knives and a rusty and beat Krog Jørgensen Bayonett. If the results are good enough I am more than willing to share. The find suprise me too, but some times you are lucky. In the future I hope to create my own design with a good blade from Øyo or Helle.
