Anyone Collect Axes & Hatchets?

Neat to recondition the old tools. Always feels good to leave things better than you found them.

Picked up this little ax at a antique shop this AM. Has a nice 23" handle and can make out a 21/2 stamp. Other letters were apparently ground of from some nitwit using a grinder on it. At least thats the only real damage they did to it, it retains its shapeThankfully they did booger up the edge at all!
Gave it good rub down with boiled linseed oil Gotta go back to pick up a pretty nice display cabinet for knives.

I really like that ax... a very clean and useful one... with years and years of "life" and use left in it to be passed on to the next generation

Thanks, it has earned it’s keep through thick and thin. Lots of guns have come and gone but I am pretty attached to my old tools.

Here were this past weekend's new pick-ups. The Sweetheart for me is the Craftsman double bit with the Craftsman logo in the double oval. I am trying to date it... I can't find my info on that in my filing cabinet so maybe the Google Machine can tell me what year it is was made. Also, a 1952 US military shovel and that makes it a Korean War era near as I can tell. And I love me some Fiskars!!!

The Swedish ax coming out for inspection and the Fiskers and the Norlund going into the tub... "Rub-a-Dub" ... It will be about 111 degress on Sunday... good for popping the rust off....

Scott, Thanks! Well, there was a blacksmith in New Mexico that years ago used to make awesome tomahawks out of ball peen hammers. I think his last name was "Green" I just did a quick search for him and did not find anything. There is a local here that makes them, but he is a bit out of my price range. He showed me one a while back it was pretty nice. I have fairly good luck finding them around here at antique stores and shows. I have love for them and I am always looking for a new one to add to my collection (AKA "The Pile").

I picked up another Fiskars and just pulled the one in the earlier photos out of the viengar cleaned it again and dipped it in the oil ...you can see the oil still dripping off it. I think it cleaned up nice.

Scott, I do split wood, I have an indoor fireplace and a couple of outdoor fireplaces in my backyard (but not so much this time of year... today was about 108 and by the weekend maybe 111-112 ) I mainly collect and sometimes I sell a few pieces, say, if I get a better example in, I will sell off one with a lot more wear and tear.

Picked this broad ax this morning at a yard sale in town for $50. I think I did good?
It is Simmons & Co. Cohoe, N.Y. Superior cast steel. Some research tells me it was probably made by J Underhill for Simmons co. Simmons died in 1861 and in 1873 the company became known as Weed & becker. I am comfortable believing this ax is pre 1873. Its in great condition, not original handle tho. Cleand nicely with 220 grit paper. It is only sharpened on one side and measuring the grinds it appears to have never been resharpened. It is quite sharp. I guess I will use electrolisis or vinegar to clean it up. The blade is 12" in length and it weighs 7 lbs 8 oz. Not a tool for a wussy!

Now that is a great find!!! ...I would like to see the maker's name on the ax after you cleaned it.

The stamps are in he polished area. Nothing I do makes them visable in the camera, tried rubbing wih chalk to no avail. sorry bout that. I cleaned it upand it looks great. Now gotta find a proper handle. Think Ive found a source. this is one of my prized finds ovar all. Just found out my brother may have a similar piece which he found some 30 years ago, if he can locate the thing.

Well, it sure is sweet, I'll say that I remember that same shape and size ax being referred to as a "Canadian Bend" ax head, but I can't recall the source. I think it was a good ax for squaring off tree trunks/logs A man (biological man mainly, I would guess... ... but these days I can't say for sure what a man is as I am not a biologist... sorry ) Would stand elevated over a tree trunk laid out and square it off to use as a support beam etc. etc.... but NOT as a Jim Beam... that (I hope) came after the work and ax handling was done for the day...

... or... maybe more accurately; A hewing axe was designed to turn round logs and lumber into squared-off pieces that can then be used to build various structures, furniture, and more. Today most people rely on sawmills to square up their wood, but a hewing axe can still come in handy for smaller needs.

Cleaning up some old rusty axes that I want to leave the heads on the handles. It makes it a little tougher as I get a lot more difficult for vinegar evaporating... But pulling the heads off is also a big pain

Zeus the GSP, thinks he is helping by trying to get me to throw the ball while I am trying to pull the axes out of the vinegar bath

The next step is the water dunk and scrubbing the axe with an abrasive pad.

The axe here in the photos with the Crown logo stamp turned out to be a great find it is a (CH) Carl Helsper axe ~ Made In Germany 4.5 lb. axe.
