What do you think about this Browning Folding Hunter

Post by Gumshoe »

I do not believe this is a genuine Browning knife, but it is so well made that I just can't call it a Frankenstein knife. It resembles a Queen folding hunter, especially with the Saber blade profile, but the blade is stamped Browning over U.S.A. on the mark side of the tang, and it looks genuine to my eye. I am told that Queen made the Browning U.S.A. pocket knives.

Closed length is 5-1/4".
Blade length is 4-1/4 " with great snap.
The scales are a gorgeous red and yellow burl hardwood with nickel silver bolsters and brass liners.

At first, I thought the scales were synthetic, but under magnification I can see lots of wood grain. Whoever put this knife together knew what they were doing.

Does anyone know what king of burl wood this is? The closest thing I can find on the internet is Exotic Amboyna Burl. My photos do not do justice to actually seeing the knife.

To verify your assumptions, I saw Browning-stamped examples in lots of fixed-blade parts leftover from Queen's closing auction. Thus, I will agree, Queen.

The wood looks really nice!

I think it does resemble a Queen folding hunter.
It is pinned like a Queen and the nail nick looks like Queens nick.

Mine is covered in Delrin.

Definitely looks more like a Queen than any Browning I remember seeing. The sabre ground blade isn't one I'd associate with a Browning stamp but anything is possible. The handles look strange to me, are you sure they are wood? Like you said, whoever put it together did a good job.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Yes Wayne, I am sure the scales are wood. You can see lots of grain with a 10 power loop.
