It is also the latest example to be added to my collection. It is a W & H, one blade, one tang stamp, 2 7/32" closed, advertising, fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife. The tang stamp is the curved or arched style, WITH the USA in the center. The main blade front tang stamp says "THE W & H CO (over) USA (over) NEWARK NJ" The main handle side says, "ABSORENE MFG. CO." - "ABSORENE" "HRH" "ZEV" The other handle says nothing, it is blank. Overall, this is my fifth W & H pocket knife that advertises this particular company, product, business, event, organization, etc. But it is my fourth in this particular pattern or style. ALL my other four ABSORENE pocket knives have been previously posted under this topic or thread. This pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. This pocket knife did need a very minor cleaning. The tang stamp is the curved or arched style, WITH the USA in the center. Prior to seeing and buying this one, I had NEVER seen a W & H pocket knife that looked like this one. So, what cutlery company made this one? I have no idea. But, the search and research continues. This pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. This pocket knife needed very little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

It also becomes the latest example to join my collection. It is a W & H, two blades, two tang stamps, 3 1/8" closed, all metal, advertising pocket knife. The tang stamps are the curved or arched style of stamp, WITHOUT the USA in the center. The main blade front tang stamp says "THE W. & H. CO. (over) NEWARK, N.J." The secondary blade front tang stamp says "THE W. & H. CO. (over) NEWARK, N.J." The main handle side says "Baldwin Pianos - EST. 1862" with a very nice image of a grand piano. The other handle side also says "Baldwin Pianos - EST. 1862" and also has the same, very nice, image of a grand piano. This is my first, W & H pocket knife, that advertises this particular company, product, business, organization, event, etc. The main blade has a good opening and closing snap. The secondary blade also has a good opening and closing snap. Neither blade has a half stop. This pocket knife is in EXCELLENT condition. It needed absolutely NO cleaning at all. I took some pictures and here it is.

With just a basic Google search, I obtained the following information regatding SACCO.....
The Smith Agricultural Chemical Company was founded by Marshall Alexander Smith and his three brothers in 1894. The company manufactured agricultural chemicals and other industrial compounds at two plants, one located in Columbus, Ohio, and one in Indianapolis, Indiana. The primary products were fertilizers, plant and animal food nutrients, commercial sulphuric acid, and battery acid. During World War II, the company utilized prisoner-of-war labor. Much of the country throughout the war faced problems with labor shortages as more men were drafted into the military. However, extra labor was still required to produce the large amounts of food, clothing, supplies and munitions needed for the war effort. Labor shortages and increased demand were heavily felt by agricultural industries in the United States. In 1942, the United States government began creating POW camps near major work sites across the country so that prisoner labor could be used to fill the shortages. One of these camps was Camp Atterbury, located in Indiana to house Italian POWs. The Italian prisoners were hired out to local farms and agricultural businesses until Italy became a cobelligerent after its surrender in 1943. In 1944, German POWs replaced the Italians as more prison work camps were established to provide labor throughout Indiana. Their labor was used through the fall of 1945 and into 1946 until the soldiers were repatriated after the end of the war.

This is my first W & H pocket knife that advertises this particular business, company, product, event, organization, etc. This pocket knife is in VERY GOOD+ condition. It has a very crisp opening and closing snap. This pocket knife needed very little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

Very recently, my trip to the post office produced this advertising, fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. It also becomes the latest example to be added to my collection. It is a VOOS, one blade, one tang stamp, 3" closed, all metal, advertising, fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says "VOOS (over) MADE IN (over) U.S.A." This is my third VOOS, fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife. But, this is my first VOOS fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife, that advertises this particular company, business, product, event, etc. The main handle side says, "Clipper Belt Lacer Co. - Grand Rapids, Michigan" It also says "patented" above the loop or ring. The other handle side has an image of a sailing ship with "clipper" spelled out in the sails. The ship is inside an oval and the oval is between the words, "TRADE" and "MARK" Overall, this is my fourteenth advertising, fob or key ring pocket knife, that is this particular pattern or style. However, this is my sixth advertising, fob or key ring pocket knife, in this particular pattern or style, that does NOT have a W & H tang stamp. My other thirteen advertising, fob or key ring pocket knives, in this particular pattern or style, have ALL been previously posted under this topic or thread. This pocket knife is in VERY GOOD+ condition. I gave it a very minor cleaning.

The following text is from the Vintage Machinery website (http://vintagemachinery.org/home.aspx)
"Before 1900 belt lacing was typically performed using a needle and stout thread. The multi-step process required a fair degree of skill. At some point someone ("Webb"? This is a subject of further research) had the idea of using metal clips to hold together the belt ends. These early systems had some shortcomings, such as the fact that they used staples that were all the same size, leading to holes in the belt ends that are in a straight line, which could lead to tearing of the belt. And a lot of steps and hand labor was still required. In 1905 a couple of Englishmen, Frederick Mitchell and Francis Gunn, patented a device for jointing belt ends. Their system used a series of D-shaped staples (clips) that were inserted individually but then crimped all at once on the end of a belt, creating a series of metal loops sticking out from the end of the belt. The same thing was done on the other end of the belt, and then a pin was passed through the loops to hold the belt ends together. At that time there was an American in London, one James Barns Stone, who found out about this new belt lacing device, came up with some minor improvements, and obtained his own patent. He moved back to Grand Rapids, Mich., and established the J. B. Stone Co. to manufacture his belt lacer. His "Clipper" belt lacer was introduced by J. B. Stone Co. in about 1910. There followed a rapid series of improvements to the Clipper system. James K. Diamond applied some basic mechanical engineering principles to improve and simplify the mechanism. Joseph C. Conn came up with the key idea of joining the clips together (which he did by forming the clips from a continuous piece of wire; an additional operation was required to cut the clips apart after they were inserted into the lacer but before being inserted into the belt end) and staggering the ends of the clips to reduce the chances of the belt tearing. And then Diamond came up with a really key improvement, which was to have separate clips joined by a strip of paper that held them in position, ready to be inserted into the holes and crimped. Diamond incorporated Conn's idea of staggering the clip ends. In 1913 the J. B. Stone Co. was renamed to the Clipper Belt Lacer Co.. The company was refinanced with a larger capitalization, which suggests that they were growing rapidly. Various imitators appeared but Clipper continued to patent new improvements to their lacers, which they made in a wide variety of models, including both stationary and handheld models. In 1995, Clipper Belt Lacer Co. was bought by Flexco Co., Downers Grove, IL, and became a division of that firm. Flexco had originally been known as Flexible Steel Lacing Co. Clipper for some years continued doing business under their old name, until 2008 when they became Flexco Grand Rapids."

The tang stamp is the curved or arched style, WITH the USA in the middle. The main blade front tang stamp says "THE W & H CO (over) USA (over) NEWARK NJ" The main handle side says "A. B. FRANK COMPANY - SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS" It also says "PATENTED" above the loop or ring. The other handle side says nothing, it is blank. This is my first W & H pocket knife that advertises this particular company, business, product, event, organization, etc. Overall, this pocket knife is in VERY GOOD+ condition. This pocket knife needed very little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

The main blade front tang stamp is the curved or arched style stamp, WITHOUT the USA in the center. It says "THE W & H CO (over) NEWARK, NJ" The secondary blade front tang stamp is also the curved or arched style stamp, WITHOUT the USA in the center. It also says "THE W & H CO (over) NEWARK, NJ" The main handle side says "SCOTTISH UNION & NATIONAL - INSURANCE COMPANY - HARTFORD, CONN." and also has a "coat of arms" or "crest" type of logo or emblem. The other handle side says "1824-ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY-1924" This is my second W & H pocket knife that advertises this particular company, business, product, organization, event, etc. This pocket knife is in EXCELLENT+ condition. This pocket knife required no cleaning at all. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.
