Yup, it's a sweetie, very light, smallish, all steel construction. No complaints and good looking wood grain. Thanks for the comments.

Here’s a cool use of wood for the handle on this Rough Ryder Bigfoot Lockback. The only frustrating thing is that every description says “wood” handles, but doesn’t say what kind of wood.

Like the striped wood. That last pic of the equal end with the stripes is a beauty. Who made that? Nice ones. The Browning with the splotch in the middle is pretty too. Nice group.

Iman, that is a cheap little Frost cutlery knife that was given to me by a good friend. It had white plastic handles on it. So, I went to a woodworking store in my town and bought a small piece of rosewood, and made myself some new handles. I was pleased how it turned out. Here's what the handles looked like..

Nice save. Looks great, nice work, you're a craftsman with skill. I always wondered how you get the old pins out and new ones in before putting the covers on? Is the old hole in the liner OK to just put in a new pin and solder It? And what about making it flush on the inside of the liner? A thin file? Thanks for the picks and would love any details you have. Again you did well, looks like you've done some before. ::tu:: ::tu::

It depends on the knife, Iman. On this little feller, all three pins go all the way through from one side to the other. Then you cut them off and basically take a small hammer and mushroom them out to hold the covers on the knife. On this one, I did increase the size of the pins just a tad by drilling out a little bigger hole through each one. After that comes the filing and sanding of the ends of the pins, and all of the finish sanding to the rest of the knife. Sometimes though, the handles are attached to the liners by short pins that just hold them to the ends of the knife, and they are attached by the same mushrooming method before the handles and liners are put back on the knife, while the pin for the spring goes all the way through from one side to the other. I love working with my hands. I repair guitars, and like to restore antiques. Knives are something I've always loved, so I am trying to learn as much as I can about repairing them, so I can get a deal and then bring it back to life! I'm cheap that way! Ha! Hopefully my explanation helped you understand it a bit. There are many out there much better that I, but I really enjoy the process for sure.

Very nice! As I-man said, you've got some impressive skills with cleaning up and fixing knives! How did you learn how to do all of that - from your Dad or another relative?
Thanks Kim. I just basically taught myself. I was that kid that tore things apart and tried to put them back together. I've always love knives, and decided to take on some pocket knife repair. And as i said, I'm kinda' cheap, so I love the ones that need a little TLC. I also have repaired guitars for over 30 years, and I'm sure that helps with some of my woodworking skills.

Self taught - impressive! Shoot, if I had your skills that's all I'd do is customize knives myself and fix up old ones. It seems that's what a seller on AAPK does, "paydirt" is his seller name. I bought a beautiful vintage Schrade knife from him where he replaced the original scales with Abalone. You could have your own business doing it and it seems like you enjoy it quite a bit. Just sayin' :D
Well, when it comes to knives, I like to buy them. It's hard for me to sell therm! I do the buy, fix, and sell thing with guitars.

No website anymore. I just have a huge list of customers that I have made over the years, and I usually just deal with them directly, that way I don't have to do much shipping.. Here's my Christmas card from last year..

Thanks a bunch for the details. Really appreciate the info, have wondered about the things you cleared up for a long time. Very grateful you shared. Some I have asked over the years refused to tell me like they were keeping some vow of silence, or some great trade secret from the uninitiated. Whatever the reason, have been rebuffed several times and had it made clear that they didn't want to answer or let me in on their methods. Appreciate the willingness to describe it like you did a ton. Thanks my friend, anytime I can reciprocate or anything, you got it. Great Christmas card fodder. Nice show, I like guitars and making noise with them. ::handshake:: ::tu::

Thanks Iman! Uh Oh, I may have just broken the code of knife makers. Well, luckily, I'm just a guy that enjoys the process, and not an actual knife maker. They are way better than I. I'm very impressed by the skill they posses. Oh, and since I'm already probably kicked out of the club, I forgot to tell you that I just take a small punch and use it to punch the pins through enough to grab them from the other side with a small nail puller like this..

Very cool ::tu:: ::tu::

I can completely understand how buying new knives and fixer uppers alike to keep for yourself is more fun than selling them.
I'm 63, so I may start selling one day, but in the meantime I just love collecting!
