Old Timer steel question .

On a old timer USA knife i was looking at they still have the box , it says "high carbon steel " would that be the old normal carbon that patinas , wanted to make sure i wasnt getting stainless , i had read in latter years they switched to it in the last old timers ? Thanks .

I don’t have boxes for hardly any of my knives, but broadly speaking Old Timer was Schrade’s carbon steel line and Uncle Henry was their stainless equivalent. There are perhaps a few exceptions, but I would assume “high carbon steel” means 1095 or something similar. If it was stainless, I think the box would say stainless.

Shouldn't honing steel need to have a hardness greater then the blades it is dressing? Not sure what the steel used is but since 1095 can only be hardened to about 58 rockwell I doubt it would be in that form alone. Maybe 1095 impregnated with carbide or some other harder metal.
