The All Scout Knives Thread

Keep an eye out for the 2 blade version , same blade etch & shield, easy open , ebony handle and sheep foot blade .
I’m sure these were made early on in the teens .

Nice knives Ripster , that early Camillus etched Boy Scouts of America is a great find , rare knife .

Thanks for posting the Scout Hero article. My uncle, Charlie Cann, was a scout and saved a kid by pulling him off some electrical lines in my hometown in Ohio. The BSA held a big parade for him and gave him a large certificate commemorating the action. I have a picture on my phone somewhere of the certificate and will post when I find it. I'm not sure if he received a knife or not.

I think the legend behind the Scout on that knife is that he once did a mile swim in a lake at a scout camp, while wrestling an alligator, all to save a mermaid! I could be wrong, I am getting old and my memory is fading.

When my son was coming up through Scouts and we were going to summer camp every year, I did the Mile Swim for six summers in a row. This was Camp Gerber in Michigan, and the lake is called Little Britton Lake, if I recall correctly. There was (and probably still is) a huge snapping turtle that lived in the lake that all the boys called Atlas. I'd say probably about 20" in diameter, which probably means he's about 100 years old. I sh!t you not, on one of my Mile Swims, I was swimming along minding my own business when all of a sudden I saw that son of a gun coming up from the bottom straight at me. There was no place to go, no place to get out. So I just kicked it into turbo and swam like hell. Never saw him again, but I didn't hang around looking for him either.

Good evening gentlemen. Lurked around this forum for years but seldom post. I do have a question or two that maybe you could help with. First are the typical 4 blade knives shown all considered scout knives even though they aren't real boy scout sanctioned knives. I have several like most folks that have various shields stating different words. An example is an arched Utica with a bar shield marked "outing".

Second question concerning these 4-blade camp? knives. A particular example is a Miller Brothers I possess that is typical Miller quality with great bone scales but this model has an unusual feature. The cap lifter/screwdriver blade is typical with the exception of having a u shape notch between the lifter and screwdriver tip. I have never seen this on any other make. I can post pictures however my wife has to assist, and it is tax season and I tread lightly around here this time of year.

On early model knives of this design, often there was a square notch on the screwdriver blade that early on was called a skate key notch but later called a gaslight bottle notch. What was the square notch actually used for?

The "notch" is a tack puller.

As requested, I am posting pictures of a few scout knives. This is my very first, do it alone, attempt at posting pictures so be kind. Since I have yet to figure out how to post pictures and text at same time, I will have to describe knives in another post as now.

The first knife probably doesn't count as a scout knife as it only has 2 blades, but I thought it was worth a view. Typical New York Knife Co. knife, however, the secondary blade is unusual enough and has enough functions to be of intertest. The blade as can be seen has a cap lifter, can opener, gaslight valve opening square? That blade is marked Pat. Applied for on one side and New York Knife on the other.

The second knife is just eye candy and is an Ulster with a shield marked "ARMY"

The third knife is the Miller Brothers with the unusual cap lifter/screwdriver/ tack puller? It makes sense to me as this blade rapidly tapers towards the tip of the blade and would easily fit under a tack.
