Case xx #65 Folding Hunter

Post by bodyworker1961 »

I recently bought a knife from a friend in some financial need for $25. It is a Case xx single blade folding hunter. From what I can garner about stampings on All About Pocket Knives this knife was manufactured 1965-9 and is a pattern #65. I can't seem to find the stamping numbers (on this knife) on the chart showing the different variations. It is 6105 with an extra 0 and SAB. Can anyone enlighten me as to why this is and what it might be worth in very good condition? I will include a pic

Bodyworker you are correct on the date it was made between 1965-1969 it is a model C61050 SAB ( sab meaning saber grind blade ) this knife known as a big coke bottle because of it's shape, this knife was made with wood and/or bone handles yours appear to be wood can't tell for sure from the pic.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the head's up, yerout. They are btw, wood handles. Is this knife a variation of the model #65?

bodyworker,

I don't believe this knife is a #65 pattern....that is a clasp style (upturned head....end opposite the blade). I believe this is a #050 pattern ( 5 1/8" swell center hunter), if it matches those dimensions when measured closed.
Also, I believe a 6 as the first digit usually indicates a bone handled knife.....this knife LOOKS like jigged bone, are you sure it is wood? Going by only a picture, I could be wrong, and open to correction. I did find it listed with that stamp and bone handles (as well as laminated wood) in Houston Price's Guide.

No matter, as $25 was a GREAT price.

Bill

P.S.
Here is a link from Bryan's Knife Guide above....with a lot more information... ::tu::

P.P.S.
It looks like there might be a 5 3/8" version of this knife as well.

Hi everyone,

Here is my $.02 on the subject... Definitely wood scales. There were indead both wood and bone C61050SAB knives made in this era. Both have the same pattern number (6) following the C. Case did not use a different number designations for jigged wood and jigged bone handles in the 60s and 70s. According to Jim Seargeant's American Premium Guide to Knives & Razors 6th edition, the bone is over 4x more valuable. He has wood listed at $90 and red bone at $400. That would be mint. It appears that I need to update the description for the pattern on the link that El Lobo posted because I just seen in the Seargeant book that there are some 5 3/8" and even 5 1/4" coke bottles or swell center hunters ...whatever you want to call them.

Thanks Bryan,

Glad your eyes are better than mine, and can tell it's wood..... ::tu:: I wasn't doubting the poster, just haven't seen the jigged wood....until now, that is.. :)

Hey Bill,

The only reason I know that it's wood is because I have a couple of laminated wood ones, and one red bone, and I've seen several others. Once you get an eye for how various Case knife handles look, things like this start to get easier to spot. That has been mine and other's experience anyways. It never hurts to have younger eyes either :D

HI!

I looked at this post prior to anyone else commenting. I have been wrong on a couple of other post. "I admitted too" But with this one you guys have done a great job. You hit on every thing that I would have said about it. The numbering, pattern variations, handle materials, condition etc. Great job of providing top notch information. That is why this group is so great to discuss these types of things with. Keep up the good work.
