Your knife looks to be in decent condition but unfortunately the handles are outgassing and once this process starts it will only get worse and forther damage the knife. It is recommended that once a knife starts to outgass that the handles be taken off the knife. This can usually be easily done by prying them off with thin screwdriver blade forced between the handles and the metal liners of the knife. Not something that you would want to do but this will keep the outgassing handles from ruinuing the rest of the knife.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

This area here is a textbook example of outgassing, how it tarnishes and corrodes metal and how it disintegrates.

Yes it is outgassing and yes the handles will likely eventually deteriorate but so what, that’s not the end of the world. It’s been around for 75 years or so and it is not going to fall apart tomorrow. Clean it, sharpen it, and stick it in your pocket and carry it every day just like your great grandfather did. Enjoy it and think of him every time you use it.

I think once it starts to out-gas soon the knife will be in ruins.
Unless you carry it everyday, you may forget about it for 2-3 months
and come back to a mess. If you really treasure the knife, get the
handles replaced today.
Someone will come along soon to tell you how to contact one of
the knife mechanics on this forum.
Nice knife. If you like knives, join the forum. You will be happy
you did.

Wow! I can’t thank you all enough for the advice and information about my knife.
While it is an heirloom, I know my Great Grandfather would want me to use it and carry it as he did.
As Bob mentioned in his reply to my post, I will be interested to hear from a knife mechanic to see how I can have the handle material replaced.

Smart decision IMHO. Unchecked outgassing will even destroy the liners in time. And storing close to other metal treasures can damage them too.
Nice knife. Grandfather had good taste.

I didn’t even see that pattern number until you pointed it out. I can’t see the “R” but it is definitely 30951967redrider wrote: ↑Wed Mar 15, 2023 11:50 amto AAPK! That's a Remington Stockman with a punch, in Candy Stripe celluloid. Celluloid, when it ages, emits a gas that will rust and pit metal so keep this knife away from any other knives you might have. If you look at my picture, there's remnants of a pattern number, which will yield more information. This knife was probably made in the 1930's. Hope this helps.
