Old Dart Point

Post by Hukk »

I found this old dart point knapped of brown chert along Kelsey Creek in Kelseyville, California, within the town limits. It was in a thick clay bank that held a lot of ancient human remains as well as artifacts. This is one of many that were found on that day after the creek had receded from a recent rain. Every significant rain would erode the clay and expose a new layer of artifacts as well as human bones which I left alone. Because it was in a clay bank, it is almost perfectly preserved.

I took this to Sonoma State University Anthropology/Archeology department around 2005 and they made the identification written on the white paper. I was later told that it could be between 4,000 and 8,000 years old - possibly a bit older. In this area these human remains would be the ancestors to the Pomo Indians - but I do not know which tribe that would be.

A year or 2 after I found this dart point (in the early to mid 70's) Sonoma State University dug up the site to save it from being washed away into Clear Lake. That's why they were so familiar with it - they already had several dozen that they had been retrieved from the site.
