Is it possible that Case produced a 5254 trapper in 1970 with a muskrat blade or had they stopped using this configuration at the end of the 60's?

As far as I know there were no 1970 54s with muskrat blades. Steve would know for sure.

The so-called "Muskrat" blade for the 54 was not an intentional variation. It was a random variation in the tooling for the main clip blade of the 54. Slightly narrower and sits in the frame differently. I'm guessing that it was an oddball stamping die that was used either until the die wore out or until Case realized that the die was producing blades that were off specifications.

I would have to check Parker's price guide, but they may or may not list the Muskrat blade variation as showing up on 1970 stamped 54's as well. If it did continue into 1970, the 10 dot 70 stamped examples would be quite rare. I have never personally seen one or heard of one existing.

Thanks Steve...this rare Case we are discussing can be found on ebay item # 175511118584. I thought this knife was suspicious because it did not fit what I had stored in that special memory catalogue that knife people develop over the years examining knives.. HA! HA!...check it out on ebay.

That one appears to be a regular 10 dot 5254, the seller is either confused or maybe just looked in a book and saw that the "Muskrat" blade was higher $$ so of course his must be the rare Muskrat blade eversion.
