The "HATCH" cutlery company
Re: The "HATCH" cutlery company
That’s a beauty Ike
Looks real good for it’s age considering back then it was probably purchased to be used, great find.

Ike, that's a great knife. I've never seen a Hatch in person.Waukonda wrote: ↑Fri Feb 07, 2020 1:12 am I am very happy with this recent purchase of cutlery history. While it may not win any beauty contests, it is very solid with great snap and half stops. It shows some wear, but it was used and respected by someone, not used and abused.
I love old knives like this, and am quite happy to add it to my "wood pile".

Bareheaded Jack knives have really been growing on me, and that one checks off all the boxes! Truly a beautiful knife!Waukonda wrote: ↑Fri Feb 07, 2020 1:12 am I am very happy with this recent purchase of cutlery history. Thank you very much, Reverand, nice comments.
Aside from the fact that this is a Hatch, I find it very difficult to pass up a decent Ebony jack with a spearpoint blade.

These Hatch tang stamps, posted earlier, have a very pleasing look. They appear to me more finished, more detailed, than most found on quality vintage knives.

Those are classy stamps for sure stumpstalker. Hatch made some nice knives. I don't think I have ever came across one.

Re: The "HATCH" cutlery company
I just received this in the 2023 POS exchange. Tang stamp is "The Hatch Cutlery Co. Bridgeport, CT". It is a 2 blade 3 and 3/4 inch jack with ebony scales. When I first got it I thought I would take it apart and see if I could put a different blade in to replace the worn down pen. But after giving it some thought, NAH just going to leave it as is. Neat old (1885-1889) knife. Thanks Kolvir!

That is a beautiful old large dogleg, OLDECUTLER.
I, for one, am glad you had a change of mind.
It ain't no POS.

Re: The "HATCH" cutlery company
Seeing as I was informed bringing old threads back to life is okay...
I got this little beauty recently and have been doing some digging but haven't gotten far. I know it's 1890's like the rest, silver (I think) scales and pins. Pins stand proud of the scales. Doesn't appear to be room beside the blades for assist tabs, but I wonder if them being removed is why the pins stand so proud. I didn't notice until I took pictures in my shadowbox, but there appears to have been a (gold?) wash on the scales and I think a nickel finish on the blade bases that has all but worn away. I haven't tried cleaning it beyond a dry cloth because I don't want to mess with the scale patina.
The blade marks are what have me at a loss. They don't match anything in this thread or that I've been able to find. Both blades are marked with a curved HATCH above B PORT CT.
Any knowledge or advice on where to look is greatly appreciated.

Re: The "HATCH" cutlery company
Yep, that's what I was able to confirm while looking through this thread. I guess I'm going to have to accept that all I'll get to know about it is it was made between 1891 and 1899 in Bridgeport. Model and a specific year would be amazing, but given the spotty data, I don't think that's going to happen.

Better than having NO idea at all on the time frame.

Probably when made the idea that someone 100 years later would be interested in the history of the knife never crossed their minds.
