Cross Collecting and Intersections

I find it fascinating how many times we find intersections of industries and manufacturers and people in collecting.
Going back to 1854 in pocket watches, 1890 in pocket KNIVES, 1910 in fishing gear, 1400's in coins... I always come to a point where stories converge or splinter. I'll have to really spend some time writing on the more interesting examples. It would be fun to hear of examples you've learned about over the years too.

BUT then in daily collecting, you find just these small and fun opportunities too.
Like this winchester knife I just saw by chance in the aapk store, I had no intentions of looking at a newer Winchester knife when I woke up this morning, and yet NOW I HAVE TO HAVE IT !

It pairs too well with a commemorative Sears Roebuck watch (Sears origin springing from pocket watches at a train station) , so it will be the 1st knife in the watch collection.

By running your serial number, it appears that your Sears watch was made by Illinois in 1898.

Thank you for posting that info. I was going to ask who made the watch as I didn't think Sears made it. The word "Special" on the movement had me leaning toward Illinois.


Now I'm curious about this comment from the OP. "(Sears origin springing from pocket watches at a train station)" I would love to know more about that.

It's a quick and interesting story really. While working as a rail station agent in 1886, RW Sears took advantage of a pocket watch consignment deal, sold out his inventory and decided to go into business. The 1st Sears catalog was almost entirley Pocket Watches. A Year later he hired Alvah Roebuck as a Watch repairman...and history was made. There is more to the story but it's easily found online if you are interested. The commemorative watch above, on the front case cover has the train station engraved too.

I may have hijacked my own thread, but it was a pocket knife that started me off today. (and I bought it too, right after this post) LoL

I like old watches but never developed an imnterest in collecting them. went to an auction last fall and there were about a dozen old pocket watches sold, all over 200$$s, 2 Amish guys bought them all. Of course Amish bought all the old Savage 99s as well.
