OWL HEADS ( yet again )
I know the knives marked with "OIL THE JOINTS" and "MUNICH IRONWORKS" are Chinese stuff.
What about the ones marked SOLINGEN, GERMANY?
Was there ever such a thing for real or just more Chinese knock off stuff?
Thanks,
W

Re: OWL HEADS ( yet again )
W,
I have maybe a clue. The Owl Head I have is German, and I think the older knives are. The key I think is in the stamping on the tang. My Owl Head is a three blade stockman with a coal miner shield, it has two owl heads stamped on each blade and Solingen Germany stamped on the back. I know this knife is from the 80's. Something to think about.

Re: OWL HEADS ( yet again )
There are some older German made Owl Heads. There seems to be no country of origin laws in Germany according to this eBay Guide. http://reviews.ebay.com/KISSING-CRANE-M ... 0004435273 This one says Kissing Crane but he says the same for ALL German knives in this post. http://reviews.ebay.com/GERMAN-KNIFE-KN ... 0004687367
I think he may be off his rocker a bit and his claims are based on here say. Good way to get sued.
Here is an interesting tidbit about Frost Cutlery that I found online. http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/3 ... 353372.htm

Hukk,
I read the posts you provided links to and I have a real problem believing the claims made that NO cutlery is still manufactured in Germany. I just don't think something like that could be kept secret and only revealed via a clindestine meeting with a shadowy figure in a chance encounter in Cuba. Come on!
As to the claim that Germany has no country of origin laws, what about the USA? Do we not require that imported products bear the markings showing the country in which they were made? It isn't the country where they are being made that requires it, it is the country where they are being sold, namely The United States of America.
With all due respect, Hukk, I think what that person is claiming is Bunk!

I've got a friend near Solingen, Germany. I'll check with him and get back to you.

If you follow the history of James Parker, Frank Buster these gentlemen tell you that they went to Solingen Germany to the factory to set up their knife companies, so that kind of shoots down the notion that no they don't manfacture knives in Germany. Hog wash!!!

I agree whole heartedly. I collect Bulldog Brand knives and custom cutlery. The Friedrich Olbertz factory in Solingen manufactures Bulldog Brand as well as Fightin' Rooster. It just goes to show you how outrageous some claims can be. That guy has about 90 or so written guides on eBay and you just have to wonder where that guy's head is at (wait - I know wherephilco wrote:Hukk,

Sometimes you run into something so outrageous that you can't help but to laugh and pass it on. This is one of those things. Of course I believe it is nothing but hogwash.

Are you insinuating that the gentleman in question would benefit from the installation of a glass bellybutton that would enable him to see where he is going?

No, he definitely would not benefit from a hole in his belly button. Read this rambling tidbit and you would think that China is making knives and other products from scrap steel out of what once was structural steel from our World Trade Center.Owd Wullie wrote:Are you insinuating that the gentleman in question would benefit from the installation of a glass bellybutton that would enable him to see where he is going?![]()

He does not know what he is talking about when he says 440B is garbage steel - Randall makes a lot of knives from it. Facts are mixed up - incorrect - AND rambling. There are some truths in there BUT what he writes is a foolish dribble - IMO. There is nothing that will help a fool like that.

Beyond help.

Re: OWL HEADS ( yet again )
Here's a little stockman marked Solingen

Fit and finish is pretty good but the springs are pretty weak.

Makes a change from "Munich Iron Works" which is where my congress claims it was made. Or is there some town in China called Oil the Joints.Owd Wullie wrote:Here's a little stockman marked Solingen

LOL. I wouldn't doubt it.dkonopinski wrote: Or is there some town in China called Oil the Joints.

I've seen the "Munich Iron Works" knives, If recall correctly those had stainless blades.
The little stockman pictured above has carbon steel blades. I don't know for sure if it Chinese or not. I really don't think this one is as the fit and finish is comparable to several other Solingen made pocket knives that I have. It is actually fitted better than my old Buck Creek trapper.
