NY Union Cutlery Co bowie hunter

Post by Gunsil »

NY Union Cutlery knife. I have never seen nor heard of one of these before. It looks like a mid-late 1800s Sheffield knife and there are no country of origin marks. It is not marked like any Union Cutlery of Olean, NY, nor Union Knife Co of Union, NY. 6&3/4" blade, horn scales with pearl tips.

I can be of zero help with determining its vintage or country of origin, but it sure is a looker!

Awesome knife Gene! Sure looks to be Bowie era with a Civil war connection.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

I don't know. It looks kind of like a Manson or Manhattan, both mostly post CW era. Definitely not an Alexander who used the NY in a shield mark. I'll ask Artie at the next NCCA meeting in March. Photos are lousy, knife has full original finish on the top part of the saber grind, too bad somebody scratched up the lower blade sharpening it. Sadly, no original sheath.

Good catch, Gene.
I'm surprised it's in as good shape as it is given it's apparent age.
