cut thru nail pulls

Post by robpa »

I see that Case is offering some knives with cut thru nail pulls. just wondering what you think of them. I kinda like em on some knives but , I dont know. i come and go on the idea. They could be handy on a bigger folder but not so much on a smaller kinfe.

Exactly! Makes them ambidextrous. My lefty son was excited to see it.

Ever see an old three-blade stockman knife with one secondary blade worn out and the others look unused? You can pretty much bet it was owned by a lefty.

They were popular for a minute. You saw them on a lot of Scagel inspired reproductions a while back.

Pretty sure the OP is in reference to these with S35VN blades released last year by Case. I have not seen them on any other than the S35VN, which is a premium U.S. made stainless steel. And yes, they go all the way through the blade, and can be accessed from both sides.

I pre-ordered the Mini Trapper BH207W from Shepherd Hills way back in September "for October delivery" they said. I've checked every day to see if they've arrived in from the Case factory yet and they're still on backorder. Then, this morning I saw that Digital-Freaks, Deadwood Knives AND goodplace2shop all have them available on eBay. So, I called SHC to find out what was going on and the nice guy there didn't have a clue. Seems kind of strange that some dealers are receiving shipments of this series way before others. Personally, I'm very patient; but, unfortunately I can't say the same for Mini-T Monkey!

Can’t speak for Case directly, but in my experience working for a Fortune 500 firm, we shipped orders first-in-first-out in direct relation to when their orders were received. I suspect others getting shipments got their orders in sooner. ::shrug::

You've never seen a Spyderco? Just Case's interpretation if the Spyder thumb hole.

Cut out or "thru-n-thru" blade holes are hardly a novel concept. Not only Spyderco & Scagel branded knives, but many other knife manufacturers as well as custom knife cutlers have used them for many years. However, to the best of my admittedly limited knowledge, this is Case's first foray into that design element.

I am not Left Handed, but I know a lot of people who are and I feel for them when it comes to traditional pocket knives. I think that this is a great idea that Case has decided to try.

Visually, I don't like them as much as a nail nick or longpull. However it is easier in terms of manufacturing, as they are punched out the same time the blade is punched. So I can see the benefit for the factory, 1 less operation to worry about later on.

I'm not interested in buying one but I would like to handle one if I ever got the chance.

I'm curious if the hole(s) would allow me to use the meat of my thumb instead of my thumbnail. I don't mean one hand opening. I'm still talking two hands but using my thumb instead of my thumbnail.

If the holes allowed me to do that I would love them!

From how they appear Rick it looks like the meat would slip slightly inside the opening thus accommodating opening, but that's strictly from the pictures, in reality the opening may be too thin. Even so though, you'd think that at least a little skin would grab the hole enough to pull out the blade. 8)

I think you're right, Mark. The opening might be too thin.

I'm thinking that these holes have the potential to turn a non-pinchable knife into a pinchable one if it has more than one blade. The Trapper pictured above looks like both blades could be opened without the use of a thumbnail if the openings are wide enough.

Case is advertising "cutout holes for easy opening" and I'm wondering if this is what they mean. I'd like to handle one just to find out.

Two questions.

First, are they advertising any 75 Stockmans, and second, what the heck side covers are BH?

I suspect Case will price me out but if I felt my supply of large Stockmans might be inadequate then maybe.

Two answers.

Yes. In fact you can buy one now. https://caseknives.com/products/deep-ca ... e-stockman. Down toward the bottom are some other 75s. Might find one cheaper from a retail dealer, or with different covers.

BH = Buffalo Horn. Has been offered in the past in smooth or jigged versions, pocket knives and fixed blades.

Ken

Edit: several 75s in stock here. https://www.casexx.com/Pattern/DisplayP ... nAutoID=27

I'm sorry. I should have asked more clearly. I meant are there any S35VN Stockman 75s with through hole nail nicks? My 6375 Stockman is from the early 1980s. It's not stainless.

I hear ya Rick. Look at the Scagel Friutport that Drukai posted right above your last post; it looks like the opening would certainly allow some skin to fit in it, and from there friction should take over. Handling one will be your best bet though I'm sure. 8)

Looking on the CCC forum it seems Case’s S35VN traditional pocket knife line was introduced at SHOT Show in January 2022 (a year ago) with knives showing up in forum members’ hands around June 2022. Some pictures I swiped from forum posts are below. There are mentions of the 54 (trapper) and 47 (large stockman) at that time. I didn’t find anything about the 75 pattern (doesn’t mean they did or didn’t make any). BTW apparently MSRP on those was about $95. Looks like the Buffalo Horn is higher priced.

At the moment I could afford one S35VN 6375 Stockman at around $95. Jigged buffalo horn does not excite me as much as stag which used to be priced about the same. Oddly I've not owned a regular stainless 6375. There have been a lot of 4 1/4" large stockmans in other brands to choose between.
