Weak springs

When I think about it, knives that are in a pre-formed display usually have the blades ""partially open". Resting in a formed cradle. Seems to me that thru the years, that spring would weaken. Wonder what the AAPK consensus is?

I have read some previous discussions regarding storing knives in a partially opened position such as they often are in store displays. The consensus seems to be that if they are positioned so that the backspring is under pressure it will eventually weaken the spring. A knife with half stops can be left with the blade opened to the half stop position without causing any significant deformity to the springs. Otherwise it should either be stored fully opened or fully closed so as to aleviate the pressure on the backspring.

As to the other issue, not only should it be taken orally for best results, but frequently as well.

A bit off topic but kind of funny.When our oldest granddaughter Kira turned 16 my wife and I took her to a very fancy restaurant as her present.Kira is a sweet girl but can be a bit slow on the uptake;especially when my wife and I start joking around(it's a generational thing).
Anyway in the course of the meal Kira mentioned to my wife that because of her irregularity in her monthly cycles,it was decided to put her on birth control pills in an attempt to alleviate the problem.She has always been pretty open with us and is not hesitant to discuss virtually anything.
Which gave me an opportunity to hit her with the classic line:I asked,"So Kira;did they instruct you in the proper use of the pill?" She replied seriously,"Oh yes grandpa." to which I replied,"No; I don't think they did.Would you like me to explain the proper use of the pill?" She replied that she did.
"Well Kira;the PROPER use of the pill is to take it and hold it firmly between your knees and whatever you do DON'T let it fall!" It took her a minute or so to get what I was telling her and for the first time she actually blushed!

Anyway back on topic.My own opinion is that if a spring is left in a loaded(under tension)position it will eventually tend to assume that shape on a permanent basis.Whether the tension will be gone is a matter of conjecture.An automobile leaf spring which is constantly under tension will eventually lose it's arch to a degree but still has plenty of tension.Try to remove one and you will find out firsthand!

The folks at Case say it doesn't hurt the springs to leave a knife in the partially open position. I don't take any chances though so I leave mine fully closed. I leave my automatics in the fully open position to keep pressure off the spring.

Now lemme thunk bout this .... If I were CASE, what would I answer to that question, if I sold/shipped a couple o thousand knives per day, with the blades partially open?

Don't know the correct answer but I have many in displays partially opened(all brands) with seemingly no ill effect to this point.

I've no experience with messing up knife springs, except by using them. I keep my junk in the closed position if I'm not doing something with it.

I used to haul super heavy loads. I was driving a rolling road block most of the time.

When it came time to park for the night, I always lowered the trailer so it took some of the weight off the springs. Just seemed like the right thing to do because with the amount of "smash" as we called it on that rig in a static mode, just seemed to me that it wasn't the best thing you could do to a piece of equipment.

It was hard enough changing the springs on that 9 axle trailer when it was unloaded and it was a REAL bear changing them with a load on it. We still broke a lot of springs but that pretty much came with the territory due to the normal abuse that thing got.

i guess the springs would weaken eventually, but it might take MANY years. Unless quality is suspect to begin with.

She was my girl friend, but I hear she's in Brown town now. She had a thing for old knife guys, that's why she left.
