Magnets for Store Display

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Magnets for Store Display

Post by Buck Casey »

Found a deal on this Case Store display. It is in good condition and has a steel display panel. Date on it was 2004. It had a few magnets with it and I got some rare earth magnets at Harbor Freight. These don't hold the knives very well on the bolsters like some I have seen. Is anybody using magnetic mount this way and where did you get strong magnets?

Depending on how much you want to spend. But have a look at a designated magnet supplier, a good one will have tables with the magnetic power of the magnets they sell. Harbour freight and such usually sell generic magnets mass produced. Just a thought. But at least look up some specialist magnet retailers.

Even rare earth magnets will not hold onto nickel silver very well. Nickel is magnetic, but the percentage of nickel is low enough in nickel silver (which is mostly copper) that it probably won't hold. The magnet should work on the spring, and on the blades (if they are not stainless). It may work well enough to work through the bolsters (if they are thin). I have some really strong rare earth magnets that were used in an industrial application (rejects that had chips in them, but still work great). They really like the springs on my knives, but I can't get them to hold through bolsters. They want to flip around to the springs or the blades.

YMMV...

I’ve bought lots of rare earth magnets from K&J Magnetics (https://www.kjmagnetics.com/. Large selection of sizes and magnetic strength.

Thanks guys for the info. I am thinking maybe longer 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch may work best so the the knife can sit on top of the magnet?

Those are relatively large for Neodymium magnets and the holding power would be overkill for a pocket knife. I used to display knives held by two 1/4" cube magnets. Perhaps get a few different sizes and experiment a bit.

I just grabbed two 1/4" cube magnets and tried it out. First photo shows two magnets attached to the portion of the main blade that protrudes above the frame with the knife closed. Second photo has one magnet attached to the back of the open blade and a second magnet underneath the knife that is attached to the back spring. Yours will hold even better because note that I have them on dimpled metal while your metal surface will be flat.

The display had a few of those cube magnets with it. They must not have been as strong as yours. I have some on order to experiment with. My thought on the longer magnet was to sit the kinfe on top of them and hopefully the backsprings would hold them in place. I found a good price on ebay for 1/4 diameter 1/2 long for $19.99 for 50. Thanks for your info!

I received my 1/4 x 1/2 magnets today. The knives still wanted to jump around to the backsprings and the would slide down the display surface a bit. They worked well with the blade open and one magnete under for support
