Professional Sharpening

Post by longbeachbum »

I have a collector quality slipjoint in mint condition, however the blades have no edge whatsoever. I think the maker neglected to sharpen them at all.

I'd like to get them sharpened, but maintain the unblemished blade finish. I'm not going to try to sharpen them myself out of fear of scratching the blades.

What I'm wondering is, would I be safe taking it to any old local knife shop, or if not, does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks so much, as usual.

JMO.

First, a question.....does the knife have no grind at the edge at all? If not, it's possible it wasn't heat treated or was just made as a display, and might not hold an edge very well any way. Is it chromed? That might be a clue. If you're not going to carry it, I wouldn't do anything to it.

That said, it's your knife, and if you really want it sharpened, or you're going to carry/trade/sell it......here are a couple of possibilities:

1. Contact the Maker (person or company) and ask them to do it.
2. Look for another maker in your area and ask them if they might do it.
3. I don't know where you live, but if your name is a clue, you could take it to Dan Delavan at Plaza Cutlery in South Coast Plaza. He would be able to help.
4. Take your chances at any knife shop. Ask them who does the work, to see if you feel confident about that shop.

Again, these are just some opinions.

Good luck,

Bill

Thanks Bill. It's actually a Wendell Carson Fightin Bull Stockman, and I bought this one to carry, but I want to keep it nice. Indeed it has no grind at all on any of the blades. I have three other FB's and they all came sharpened. So do you think this was an oversight? I guess I'll e-mail Wendell and tell him I'd like to send it back to him for sharpening.

As a back up, I'll check out Dan Delavan at South Coast Plaza. That's only about five miles from my office.

Thanks for the good advice, once again.

Bill, thanks for turning me on to Plaza Cutlery. Dan's brother Russ did a dandy job on my knife, and the price was very reasonable. Nice folks too.

Thanks as always,

Jim
