Since I don't speak French

Post by Owd Wullie »

I looked at the pictures.. :P
http://www.couteaux-jfl.com/images_choix.htm Those folks have a LOT of info on that site and some great pictures of old knives.

I found out the BATISSE marking was still in use as late a 1937 and the "man in the moon" resembled another French knife makers mark. The BATISSE knives were primarily exported to Mexico and Spain around the turn of the century if I read all that right. ::doh::

I have a friend that has one of these and we were wondering how old it is, It has XIX on the blade. I will get a photo of it if you think you can give me some info on it like how old how much it may be worth or just some history.
I couldn't make head or tails on they were writing on the site.

It's just as well that you don't speak French; it's only good for surrendering, anyhow...

I've got a friend that would argue that point. He's an "old school" Frenchman. The weren't always like that. The free French were fighting SOB's. Many an Allied airman owed his life the French resistance, and the Normandie-Neimen went to Russia during WWII, flew Russian planes and kicked the crap out of the Germans on a regular basis.

I won't be surprised if the current regime gives us a similar reputation with the world. ::disgust::

And then there is the old joke about the French military selling all their excess rifles after WWII. The ad read "Rifles for sale - never fired, and only dropped once".

Owd Wullie is right with the history but now???? And yeah, our reputation may already be that 'we leave'. Ask people in countries that we 'liberated' and left on their own. Come to think of it, see that Tom Hanks movie about Charlie Wilson. Apparently, Ben Laden offered us his help and we told him to go away.
That rumble in Washington are the guys at Arlington rolling over everytime somebody there makes a statement that totally disregards what this country stood for (yup, I said it past tense).

Es verdad mi amigo.

Just watched a show about the battle for the North Atlantic. Convoys vs Wolf Packs. Somewhere along in 1943 or so, the US had built enough new ships to replace the tonnage that the wolf packs had sunk in the previous years. The joke was that the US was building ships so fast that they were running out of names for them.

Look at us now.

Very true, and they were certainly in the game against the British in the 18th century.

Just havin' some fun.
