Are these real Remington knives?
Hi everyone, I am fairly new to the knife world, but eager to learn more! I love this website and wish I would have found it sooner!! I have literally 100's of knives, I am working on selling them, but I believe my collection has some fakes. I ran into a few Remington's, I cannot find this shield and there is no tang stamp on them either. Do all Remington's have tang stamps? I have attached a few pictures. Any and all advice welcome!

Re: Are these real Remington knives?
I'm not a Remington expert or collector, albeit, I have a few. However, both your knives are stamped "china", and that would make me suspect that they're not true Remington knives. Someone who knows for sure will come along and either confirm or state whether these are counterfeit or not.
Nevertheless...Welcome Aboard. Hope you hang around and show us some of your other knives.

They are real now, just like Schrade, Marbles, Queen and all the other once good names that have been degraded.

Lilone: Just for the record. "Real" Remington knives weren't made after 1940 when Remington sold the knife business to Pal Blade Co. and went into war production of arms, etc. Other American companies produced knives stamped ,"Remington" but your word, "real", to most collectors, is reserved for pre-1940 knives. Prices for the later ones, especially the Chinese-made ones, reflect their lower status. Good luck. J.O'.

Re: Are these real Remington knives?
This is an interesting topic. People will collect anything, often with no idea of the history of the items.
I once had a conversation with a guy about knife collecting. He said he collected Remington pocket knives. I asked him if he had any Remington “bullet” knives. He said he had several. But after further conversation he said he had all the boxes too. It became apparent he was collecting the newer, post-1980 reproduction Remingtons made by Camillus. When I asked him if he had any older “original” made-by-Remington pre-1940 versions, he said he had never heard of them.

Re: Are these real Remington knives?
I've got an old knife price guide that states at the height of their production Remington was producing 30,000 knives a day.
Is there any truth to this?

I’m a little sad that old names that once meant quality are being stamped on inferior products now. Including the historical firearm companies.
I’m already skeptical by nature, and this is pushing me toward cynical. So much for kinder, gentler, and more sensitive, I was never very good at it anyway.

They cranked out so many pre-WWII it's no surprise there are still so many kicking around. I would take a Camillus/GEC/USA made Remington over a Chinese one any day. But the originals are still the best in my book.

Re: Are these real Remington knives?
Hey everyone, im new here, so I apologize in advance if this is the wrong place to post this, but i was researching Remington knives on the web because my grandfather left me a knife after his passing years ago, and this topic was regarding a question on Remington knives soo, ya... Anyway I was wondering if anyone could explain how one might identify a "real" Remington knife (pre 1940 era is what someone in the comments said, i think?). Are there any inherent characteristics one might expect to find on an original that would not be found on a replica? Thank you for your help in advance!

Re: Are these real Remington knives?
Welcome to AAPK.
Doing your own research is a good start, however to most folks nowadays that means “Google” which is not always a good thing because misinformation is rampant on the internet. A good reference book is a worthwhile investment. The simplest answer to your question is to examine the materials used in the knife. Pre-1940 knives were made using mostly natural materials like bone, genuine stag, mother of pearl, etc and synthetics like celluloid and hard rubber. The predominant blade material was carbon steel.
The knife in your pictures has Delrin synthetic handles, made to imitate genuine bone. Delrin was not invented until the 1950s and not used for knife handles until around the mid-1960s. Which means your knife could not have been made pre-1940. Your knife has stainless steel blades, not carbon steel. Very few pocket knives had stainless steel blades pre-1940. Last but not least, the pattern of your knife having the sawtooth blade was not made by Remington pre-1940.
A good reference book on Remington knives will have pictures of tge old original Remington patterns, and possibly the newer reproduction knives as well.

Re: Are these real Remington knives?
Here is an original R1123 bullet knife made between 1920-1933. You can immediately tell it is an old knife because of the patina, the blade steel, and the look of the handle jigging.
The more you look at the old ones vs. the newer ones, or Chinese ones, the sooner you'll get an eye for immediately knowing the difference.

Thanks Treefarmer! It is actually my grandfather's knife that he bought from a knife friend of his. He's had a few offers over the years to buy it, but he seems content to keep this one for a while yet.treefarmer wrote: ↑Fri Oct 21, 2022 5:03 pm That old gal is a real prize, Rookie!
