Cattaraugus Bowie - sort of

Post by orvet »

Life is been a bit busy lately and I haven't had much time to work knive and even less time to take pictures and post.them. This is one wanted to share, just because it's so unusual. A friend of mine had a Cattaragus blade that he wanted completed, but he wanted a nice stag handle on it. I showed him some the stag tapirs I had chose one that came off of an old carving set that was probably near one hundred years old, and I think it was from Germany. The stag was so old and apparently han been washed so often it had very little color left to it. I was able to mix the color he liked and he sent me the blade a compass to put in the handle of the knife and he wanted some specialized tooling on the leather sheath so he sent that to me as well.
When it was all completed this was the final result.
I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Great work Dale, very handsome knife and sheath combo. The stag turned out really nice. Does your friend plan on using the knife or will it just be for display?

Very nice! I love the color you got on that stag!

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it.
My friend said it will be for display, not for using.

The compass in the pommel was not my choice, but was chosen and supplied by my friend. In my personal opinion I think the compass is anticlimactic, but the my friend loves it, so that is what's important.

Beautiful work Dale! Your buddy will enjoy displaying his new knife for many years to come! I agree about the compass, seems kindda cheesy on that gorgeous knife, but to each his own! And, IMHO, it's every bit a bowie knife, not just "sort of"! 8)
