What Is Your "Holy Grail" Knife

And then there was this GEC #77 Stag Yankee Barlow that I bought new from KSF when it was released in 2014, but foolishly sold it when I needed some quick cash to fix my roof.

I regretted selling it so much, I tried and tried to find another one to replace it, but no one wanted to sell one for a reasonable price. So, I did the next best thing and got a 2022 model with a spear point blade...

...and had Lansky1 modify it into a Wharnie. Kind of a "back door" way of acquiring a Holy Grail .

Can't believe I forgot to list this one. I guess because I've been searching for one for so long (20+ yrs) that I kinda forgot about it, figured it was destined to forever remain the unfulfilled desire of my knife collecting heart, i.e., a "true" Holy Grail. Then I happened upon this one in an old thread right here on AAPK. Turns out it belongs to none other than jerryd's cousin . Now, if I can just figure out how to convince him to sell it to me, my knife collection would be complete and I could finally retire from collecting once and for all (my wife would love that! )

LOL!!! Dude, you may always feel free to comment on anything I post, positively or negatively...I have pretty thick skin and I appreciate sincere candor and I am always curious to know the honest reactions of other knife-lovers/collectors to the knives I like (imagine how boring it would be if we all liked the exact same type of knife ). I realize that that Spyderco isn't everyone's taste, but it has special significance to me beyond the actual knife itself (which even I will admit is somewhat of a...what was the word g'dogg used?...FREAK! ) You see, Spyderco named that particular pattern the "Q-Ball" (usually shortened to just "Q") due to the exposed ball bearing pivot which, apparently, they felt resembled a billiards cue ball. So that appeals to me for obvious reasons (the "Q" part, not the cue ball--I'm not bald). Secondly, 1998 was the first year I came to Hawaii, although I didn't permanently move to Napo'opo'o/Captain Cook (in South Kona) until 5 years later (2003). Finally, if you look closely at the laser-cut shapes in the blade, you'll see the image of a Pacific Blue Marlin which is in recognition of Kailua-Kona being home to one of the major international ocean fishing tournaments in the world:

So, for me, there's a lot going on with that Spyderco "Q" KONA than meets the eye. (Oh, and I like modified Wharncliffe serrated blades too! )

Well ~Q~! Thanks for understanding my comments, as well as the freedom to post what I want in the future. Although your knife isn't for me, I can certainly understand it's importance to you from your explanation. You seem to look a lot deeper into a knife than I do, if I like it from the outside that's usually good enough for me, whereas you go way beyond the outside and thoroughly examine all the aspects of it, a true collector. I guess we're all different where this is concerned, some, like myself are more of accumulators and some, like you are collectors, and for me this hasn't changed in the 2 years I've been here. With all the traits your knife possesses that relate to you is easy to see why you like it so much. Thanks for the fishing link as well, made me wish it was me in that boat instead of being here with minus temperatures on the way. From the first day I read your avatar and saw you live in Hawaii I've been totally envious, do you mind me asking how you happened to be so lucky as to live in paradise? Do you ever go to Waimea Bay to watch the monster waves? Thx bud, and thoroughly enjoy your new ~Q~ Kona!

I have "0" Spydercos, but if I did collect them I would absolutely have to have that one! Visually, it is a train wreck, and that's what I like about it. It would be the perfect BBQ knife-

Setting high standards is a good thing IMHO, especially when it comes to your grail knife. I’m the same way, kinda like my 13 year old grandson whose “eyes are always bigger than his stomach.”

The problem with “holy grail” knives, at least for me, is that if I find them I can’t afford them. I know that going in. The good news though is that a few of them I’ve searched high, low, and long, and eventually found them at a price I could afford. Of course there is that one…………..

Thought long and hard about it, but couldn't decide what to throw on this post. Today this one came and seemed to fit the bill. Tim Britton custom EZO with blue Mammoth tusk and BG-42 blade, steel liners. Definitely a grail for the EZO pattern and the ivory scale genre. Thanks for looking.
