What would you do if you received this knife?

I finally received my latest order on a couple of knives I purchased and when I opened up this Schatt & Morgan File & Wire Tested Teardrop Jack I noticed that things just weren't quite right...

So using the picture with the leaves that shows a correct model I noticed the following differrence...They put the etching on the wrong side of the blade

My question is should I return the knife or keep it as a collector piece with a mistake....??

Maybe it's just my twisted way of looking at things but maybe a left handed knife ain't no bad thing to have.

some people love to collect factory screw up's and some people only want mint, so the question is what do you like? as an investment it is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

my question would be, what is the company's police on this sort of thing, if it was a factory screw up and it was caught at the factory would they have let it go out? would they have scrapped it, or would they have sold it as a factory second?

If this is indeed something that they would have scrapped and not let out of the factory then it might be worth keeping because of their policy and the rarity of it. if on the other hand they would have let it go anyway or if they would have sold it as a factory second then I personaly would send it back. because that just makes it a screw up and not something that beat the odds and got loose.

Bottom line collect what you like and feel comfortable with. I am sure some of the more experienced collectors here can help you make an informed decision. thats what I like about this place. good luck.

I would personally keep it. It makes that knife unique. If it bugs you, send it back. Or, I will give you a dollar for it.

Its up to you Sunburst, like has already been stated, it depends on what you like, personally I would keep it and buy another one to display next to the factory mistake. JMO

You could contact the dealer and let him know what you have. He might be able to shed some light on what you have.
Personally I would keep it just because it's different. It is a nice looking knife.

He he, I remember an old joke about things going wrong with computers: "That's a feature, not a problem".

Actually I guess that I would keep the knife since it looks fine to me, but buying things for collecting or because they appeal to you is a personal thing, if you like it keep it, if not send it back. I believe some people would keep it and order another one etched on the "correct" side.

Factory error knives are very rare to own in this day & age with collectors in the hobby, if I were you I would hang on to this one for an investment! Please keep in mind that my opinion is widely shared on this matter with those in the hobby that are serious collectors sunburst!

The only problem is the shield is on the opposite side of the script.If you are going to display it either get a properly made one or keep it and get another that is made right.

Hi sunburst. You should do whatever feels right to you. It is a great looking knife. I would probably buy a 'proper' one and then would own a great pair. I think one of the most valuable stamps ever produced was printed upside down by mistake. Who knows, you may or may not have something valuable, but it will make for a great conversation piece regardless. Just my opinion

I agree with Kiferbros 100%, and I think Queen would prefer to scrap knives with these kinds of errors.

Down the road, I don't know how much an error like this might affect value. Would an old remington be worth more if the Remington etch was on the wrong side of the blade?

I'd say keep it.
It will probably take longer to become valuable, but as a factory error it will appeal to many collectors in the future. Put it under your hat for a while, and if you want to get one to use, get another.

(then again, I'd drop it into my pocket straight away, if I were you

Myself, I like the idea of stashing it and waiting a couple of years or 10, then put it up for auction and see what happens
